So for example C-N-G,  Compressed Natural Gas, that's relatively close at hand, Advanced Diesel Technology  which we are pretty excited about that's a little further off and then we have a gasoline  powered fuel cell which is probably 2010 before we get all the bugs ironed out.  But they  are all things we see eventually getting into the hands of the customer.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:   Bernard Robertson, SVP Engineering DaimlerChrysler\u003cbr/\u003eAt last week's Los Angeles Auto Show, DaimlerChrysler also unveiled an experimental  fuel-cell-powered sport utility vehicle called the Jeep Commander. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's designed to use methanol as its main energy source, which would be converted on  board to the hydrogen a fuel cell needs to create electricity. \u003cbr/\u003eAt present, however, the system does not work.\u003cbr/\u003eDaimlerChrysler also unveiled the Chrysler Citadel, a sport sedan with a hybrid  powertrain that uses a V-6 engine to drive the rear wheels and an electric motor to drive  the front wheels.\u003cbr/\u003eDaimlerChrysler officials say the result is the equivalent power of a V-8, lower  emissions and V-6 fuel economy.     \u003cbr/\u003eSuch a powertrain could be in production by 2003.   \u003cbr/\u003eAnother DaimlerChrysler concept car introduced on Monday uses a supercharged, 325- horsepower V-8 engine powered by compressed natural gas. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Dodge Charger R-T is designed to be a clean-burning muscle car. \u003cbr/\u003eIts key technology is a new storage tank that takes up less space than a typical, heavy  tank needed for compressed natural gas.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe problem with natural gas is there is no widespread system of filling stations. \u003cbr/\u003eFor now, the best hope for natural gas vehicles is with business and government fleets.   \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"This year for the auto show we are going to have a broad array of concepts four in total  and they will include passenger cars, jeeps and one very, very special Dodge concept  which I think will wow the show.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  John Herlitz, SVP Product Design, DaimlerChrysler\u003cbr/\u003eIn the short term, DaimlerChrysler is betting that high-tech diesel fuels will meet tougher  emissions standards in the next several years. \u003cbr/\u003eThat bet is demonstrated in the Dodge Power Wagon, an oversized pickup packed with  a 7.2-litre, turbocharged diesel engine.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's designed to run on a synthetic diesel-type fuel derived from natural gas.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause it is made from natural gas, it lacks the polluting sulphur that comes from  crude oil-derived fuels. \u003cbr/\u003eThe automaker hopes the hulking truck will draw enough attention to refocus the debate  on diesel technology.   \u003cbr/\u003eDiesels emit about half as much carbon dioxide as gasoline engines. \u003cbr/\u003eCarbon dioxide is a so-called greenhouse gas that is believed to be contributing to  global warming. \u003cbr/\u003eBut conventional diesels also release more soot and oxides of nitrogen.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists have been lobbying against diesels, even as a near-term solution. \u003cbr/\u003eDaimlerChrysler A-G showed off an unusual van-like car on Sunday that will become its  first production entry in what the industry calls \"crossover vehicles.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe 2001 Chrysler P-T Cruiser will go on sale in early 2000 and will sell for well under  20-thousand U-S dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the bull-nosed Cruiser is small on the outside, it has a generous amount of  interior space when the three passenger seats are folded, which executives hope will  appeal to a wide array of drivers. \u003cbr/\u003eOf all the technologies DaimlerChrysler is studying, the diesel hybrid is the closest to  being practical for everyday use.\u003cbr/\u003e Detroit, U.S - January 3, 1999 \u003cbr/\u003e1.
