While current treatments with calcium and estrogen slow the disease process, these new drugs actually reverse it. Researchers have found that the bone density of patients prescribed Fosomax, Risedronate and slow release Sodium Fluoride increased by almost seven percent after three years. The bones of women who received no treatment, continued to grow thinner. The study also found that the drugs also decreased hip and spine fractures by almost 30 percent. The only side effect so far is\u003cbr/\u003emild heartburn. The studies ran for three years, but researchers say that after menopause women with a high risk of osteoporosis may have to take the drugs for the rest of their lives. All the drugs are experimental but the US Food and Drug Administration is expediting the approval process so they could be available as soon as next year. Victims of this disease say speed is important because osteoporosis causes 1.5 million fractures a year, and half of the people who have them never walk again.\u003cbr/\u003eWoman getting x-rays.
