These...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe finishing touches are being put to an eco-friendly museum in the middle of the Egyptian desert.\u003cbr/\u003eOne complete, it aims to boost awareness of the country's marine life history - and get visitors thinking more about climate change. \u003cbr/\u003eThese whale bones lay where they were found more than a century ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're part of a visitor trail already open in the shadow of a new museum, in the dusty Egyptian desert.\u003cbr/\u003eThe site, 150 kilometres southwest of Cairo, is several hours drive away from the nearest stretch of water, the Gulf of Suez.\u003cbr/\u003eThis whale fossil was discovered in 1902 in Zeuglodon Valley along with hundreds of others.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were so big that the lead archaeologist, Hugh Beadnell, thought they were dinosaurs. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, several decades later, in the 1990s, archaeologists proved that they were in fact marine mammals - and renamed the area Wadi El-Hitan or \"Valley of the Whales\" in Arabic.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, UNESCO declared Wadi El-Hitan a World Heritage Site.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd now a new museum is being constructed - to house, preserve and celebrate the fossils.\u003cbr/\u003eThe finishing touches are being put to the Wadi El-Hitan Climate Change and Fossil Museum, before it opens next year.\u003cbr/\u003eIt forms an international partnership between the United Nations, Italy, Egypt and the local communities in Wadi El-Rayan. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Putting a museum in the field, where you can see evidence from past environments, how it was, fossils of whales in the middle of the desert, sharks, marine turtles, and dugongs, and having it and showing this story in that spot makes people a lot more understanding,\" says Gabriel Mikhail, the museum's lead architect.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the museum is not just a place to view the fossil collection, it also aims to educate the public about climate change and sustainable architecture.\u003cbr/\u003eThe museum itself is designed to be eco-friendly.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's been half-buried underground to passively cool the structure and keep energy and other costs low. \u003cbr/\u003eWorkers are now carving shafts into the spiral-shaped dome to allow for air and light to reach the interior exhibits without electricity.\u003cbr/\u003eBuilding materials are locally sourced and all construction workers are locals.\u003cbr/\u003eSurrounding buildings are small domed structures, the sandy colours match their surroundings. \u003cbr/\u003eMikhail explains the thinking behind the museum's buildings.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We used eco-mimicry by making the buildings, their shape and their texture match the landscape.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEco-mimicry is a construction technique that incorporates designs found in nature into human projects to lower carbon footprints and blend in with the local environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Italian government has donated almost 180 solar panels to power the entire facility - at an estimated cost of 15 million euros (19 million US dollars) to make sure the grounds are as eco-friendly as possible.\u003cbr/\u003eThe marine fossils at Wadi El-Hitan are considered to be the key link to understanding the evolution of whales. \u003cbr/\u003eLooking at the fossils of the 18-metre long basilosaurus whale and sharks, crocodiles, sawfish, turtles, rays and a mangrove swamp, has led archaeologists to theorise that 40 million years ago during the Eocene period, Wadi El-Hitan was a teeming aquatic habitat with carnivorous whales at the top of the food chain. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If we go back to ancient times, Wadi El-Hitan had 40 million years ago a completely different climate than we have today. There was water here, water surrounded all of this around us now, the temperature was more moderate, and we understand this from the remnants of what was then here like the mangrove swamp. We know by looking at ecosystem whether it was warm here or not,\" says Mohammed Sameh, the director of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs' Department of Geology and Paleontology. \u003cbr/\u003eSameh is philosophical in his approach to studying climate change.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to examine the (climate) as one earth. There is nothing that just effects the West, and the effects of the West change things here. We must examine the earth as one thing, and question these effects on the whole planet, not just a single effect or solitary place.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors can camp at the site and hike, but not drive, through the interpretive trails leading to the fossilised remains of saw tooth sharks, two species of ancient whales, mangrove forests, ancestors of modern dugongs or \"sea cows,\" and crocodiles. \u003cbr/\u003eAmany Nakhla, who works for the UNDP's Energy and Environment department, says the site is special.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The place is really unique. It's like being cut off from the rest of the world, being in a place which used to be an ocean billions of years ago, the bottom of the sea.
