Wide shot of workers packing Garden component\u003cbr/\u003eMandarin/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eA group of landscape architects in China have received an unusually large order from the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city of Portland, Oregon, have put in a request for a classical Chinese Garden to be built in China before it is transported to the U-S where it will have a permanent home.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Suzhou style garden is expected to cover a surface of nearly 4-thousand square metres making it the largest classical Chinese Garden outside of China. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the Suzhou Institute of Landscape Architectural Design, forty-seven-year-old Zhuang Mu, is very busy.\u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, his latest task may well be the largest order he and his colleagues have ever agreed to undertake in their lifetime.\u003cbr/\u003eIn October 1995, the city of Suzhou, a hundred kilometres west of Shanghai, received a purchase order from the U-S, to provide a classical Chinese garden for the city of Portland.\u003cbr/\u003eSuzhao-style gardens have become famous for their beauty and traditional integrity - much appreciated by people living within and outside of China.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce known as the \"Venice of the Orient\", Suzhou itself contains what is widely regarded as the most exquisite collection of classical gardens in China.\u003cbr/\u003eSome Suzhao gardens date back five centuries. \u003cbr/\u003eUnlike many Chinese cities that have bulldozed their past to build modern tower blocks, Suzhou has successfully protected its cultural treasures, earning the status of UNESCO world heritage.\u003cbr/\u003eBuilt like picturesque miniature worlds, the gardens are designed for scholarly retreats within the city, allowing visitors to remove themselves from the ugly realities of the outside world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plants and trees form only part of the equation that make up a Suzhou garden.\u003cbr/\u003eFree-standing stones and interlocked wooden structures add to the contrast of lines and material which the garden reflects according to its own particular philosophy and view of the world.\u003cbr/\u003eMixing man-made architecture with the natural landscape symbolise s a merger between rigid Confucianism and a Taoist appreciation of chaos.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the whole, China has three different kinds of gardens.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Emperor gardens\", also known as the Ming or Beijing gardens, are characterised by their size and magnificence.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Temple gardens\", on the other hand, are simpler and more symbolic.\u003cbr/\u003eFinally, there are \"private gardens\", of which Suzhou provides the best examples. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's these private Suzhou gardens that have proven to be the envy of many cities in and outside of China.\u003cbr/\u003eSo appealing are they that Portland was willing to put forward 2-point-7 (m) million U-S dollars for the pleasure of owning one. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Oregon based city isn't  the first city in the U-S to make such a purchase.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth Seattle and News York have already got theirs.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with a surface of around 3-thousand 7-hundred square metres, Portland is set to have the largest classical Chinese Garden outside China, three times the size of the Suzhou garden in Vancouver, British Columbia.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the foundation elements of the garden are completed, the components will be shipped to Portland where it will be assembled, on location, by Chinese builders.\u003cbr/\u003eOver a thousand cubic metres of wood and 5-hundred tons of stone will be used for the construction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Suzhou company say they are keen to provide the most authentic finish for their project.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the components, especially the wood work, are hand-made by some of China's best craftsmen, using centuries old techniques and designs. \u003cbr/\u003eMost of the wood used, known as nanmu, is indigenous to China and is closest, in comparison, to the Western elm.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the nanmu came from a thousand year-old trees and most of the logs were purchased by the company last year before the government banned the cutting of forests following the country's worst flooding in decades.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the Chinese side, more than 2-hundred people from the Suzhou institute are involved in the production of the structural elements. \u003cbr/\u003e4 years and eight designers later, the project looks set to finish in time for next year. \u003cbr/\u003eBut as Chief architect of the project, Zhang Wei Ren, points out, designing a Chinese garden is not something anybody can do.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"You have to have a good knowledge of Chinese paintings, Chinese poetry, especially on Chinese art regarding mountain and waters. to overcome is the issue of plants.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U-S currently bans the import of foreign plants for fear of a beetle infestation.\u003cbr/\u003eSuzhou designers are currently working with their U-S counterparts to find American plants that would provide adequate substitutes.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly 2 (m) million U-S dollars of the garden's total cost of 9 (m) million U-S dollars remain to be raised. \u003cbr/\u003eBut both side remain confident that the garden will open as expected on June 1, 2000, and once finished the garden is expected to house over 70 different  kinds of plants and
