Wide of street
Many people in Iran are turning to the internet to access information and news about the world and Iran.
In recent years the electronic media and web-blogs are increasingly gaining popularity over their print counterparts.
Newspaper editors are under pressure from the government and are often told how to cover issues ranging from nuclear negotiations to local crime control.
Certain views cannot be published freely, such as direct criticism of high ranking Iranian officials or insulting ethnic groups or religious beliefs.
So many people are turning to the internet for a more independent view of their world.
Downtown Tehran looks like any other modern bustling city.
The newspaper kiosks are busy, but residents like Ali says that recent years many people are choosing to get their news from the internet as it is more convenient.
Afshin Dowlat Abadi, a student says that lack of press freedom is the reason why people are turning to the internet as a source of news.
The NGO Reporters without Borders, ranked Iran 166 among 169 countries in its annual worldwide press freedom index for 2007.
It says that Iran continues to restrict media, close newspapers and arrest journalists on charges like acting against national security, spreading propaganda against the state and insulting officials.
Web blogs are a popular forum for dissidents to express themselves freely.
Tahmineh Hadadi, is a student of journalism who updates her web log regularly.
She says that the internet offers a good way to keep herself update with the latest news, but also to share her own views on political and other issues with others.
However, the government has cracked down on bloggers too and many of them are prevented from continuing their activities.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed a exhibition of newspapers in Tehran in November 2007.
He said his government is open to criticism and the press is free to express itself despite different tastes and political stances.
Since Ahmadinejad came in office in 2005, there are more newspapers, usually smaller in circulation, that are opposed to Ahmadinejad than those that are in favour of his administration.
However, the government has closed liberal papers and Washington-based Freedom House says "the Iranian government has forcibly closed or banned more than 100 publications since 2000." Iran has also limited the access of the foreign press.
Professional journalists are also using the websites and blogs as a place to put their analysis and views.
Taghi Dejakam, is an editor and writer of Kayhan, an ultra-conservative and hardline daily that supports the government.
He says that it is a good forum to write daily and read the views of others.
He says that he updates his blog regularly.
Rajabali Mazroui, is the head of the Association of Iranian Journalists and former reformist member of Iranian Parliament.
He says that people are using the internet as it offers access to the news more quickly, and is less censored than newspapers.
Iran's reform movement peaked in the late 1990s after former reformist president Mohammad Khatami was elected and his supporters swept parliament.
But hardliners who control the judiciary, security forces and powerful unelected bodies in the government blocked attempts to ease social and political restrictions.
Numerous pro-reform newspapers were shut down, and since Ahmadinejad's election, those that remain have been muted in their criticism fearing closure.
Iranians generally have access to mainstream Web sites, including U.S. media and government sites.
But according to Reporters Without Borders, Iran today filters 10 million "immoral" sites.
In addition to pornographic sites, some dealing with religion and politics are targeted and since the summer of 2006, the censors have concentrated on online publications dealing with
