But the search with  conventional, ground-based instruments has been without success.\u003cbr/\u003eEventually the gas cooled - to only a few million degrees - and condensed to form stars  and galaxies.  All other elements, including those that built planets and life itself, are  thought to have been formed in the fiery life and death of stars.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a team of astrophysicists from Johns Hopkins University have found a way to see  helium, and according to one of the team, Arthur Davidsen, finding the gas so far away  \"supports the whole idea of the big bang.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"The gas that was created in the Big Bang is  mostly hydrogen and 10 percent helium,  we have now found the helium, the hydrogen is invisible it turns out because it is  ionized which makes it transparent.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Arthur Davidsen, Johns Hopkins University astrophysicist\u003cbr/\u003eIt is believed the gas atoms cannot be seen because they have been ionized - stripped  of electrons - making them invisible to instruments peering through the Earth's  atmosphere.  Even the Hubble Space Telescope lacks the equipment needed to see  the gas.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Davidsen and others believed that a telescope looking in the far ultraviolet spectrum  from space could detect at least part of the elusive gas. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is a little like looking at a lighthouse from a distant ship, we are looking at that light,  that source of energy and analysing it to see if we can see any evidence of the fog  between us and the lighthouse.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Arthur Davidsen, Johns Hopkins University astrophysicist\u003cbr/\u003eThe team reasoned that helium, which has two electrons while hydrogen has only one,  would be harder to ionize and so more easily found.\u003cbr/\u003eThe telescope was flown aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in early March 1995 and  focused on a powerful quasar star some 10 (b) billion light years away. Scientists  hoped that the spectra of the light from the quasar would reveal the gas deep in space.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Davidsen and his colleagues analyzed data from the Astro-2 mission, they found  the clear signature of helium.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the amount of helium found was consistent with what theorists had predicted would  remain from the big bang. \u003cbr/\u003eUsing the accepted ratio of helium to hydrogen, the astronomers could then estimate  the amount of hydrogen.
