Close of patient with needles, pull focus to close of head of man with needles  \u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat patients by inserting needles into the body.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the ancient therapy is undergoing a revival in the place of its birth as more and more Chinese undergo acupuncture.\u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture is making a comeback where it all began.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are now 18,000 registered acupuncturists in the country, according to China Association of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. \u003cbr/\u003eFor many of Beijing''s residents a trip to the acupuncturist is the first port of call for life''s aches and pains.\u003cbr/\u003eJiang Ruixia is a relative newcomer to the treatment but she says it is a way to find relief from her sore shoulder.\u003cbr/\u003eRuixia lies on a bed and the acupuncturist inserts around 15 needles into specific points on her back and shoulder. \u003cbr/\u003eWires are then connected to needles and an electric current is passed through to make the treatment more effective - the machine even plays a festive tune.       \u003cbr/\u003e15 minutes later, the 54-year old company accountant finds her shoulders relieved.   \u003cbr/\u003eRuixia says: \"My shoulder aches very often, and I tried various medicines and massage but none of them worked for me, so I decided to try acupuncture treatment. Indeed, acupuncture has a relatively stable curative effect but no side effect, so the treatment has been widely recognised by people.\"     \u003cbr/\u003eMany patients also turn to acupuncture for help treating psychological problems.\u003cbr/\u003e42-year old Dai Shuqin has been suffering from anxiety and neurosis for many years, and she has been coming for acupuncture treatments twice a week for many months.\u003cbr/\u003eNeedles are inserted to acupuncture points on her head.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"\"Acupuncture helps me have a good sleep and make me not worried. I have serious anxiety neurosis for years, and I often feel that I can take it anymore... I just feel so comfortable after acupuncture treatment. I feel my heart is open and all the anxieties have gone, that is so wonderful.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine to treat patients by inserting needles into various acupuncture points in the body.  \u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture is believed to have a history of around 1,800 years with detailed theory and practice skills  found in many ancient documents in China such as Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian) Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor''s Inner Canon).\u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture is based on the belief that health is determined by a balanced flow of Qi (pronounced: Chi) which Chinese believe is the life energy, both vital and present in all living organisms. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to this philosophy, this Qi energy is believed to circulate in the body along twelve major pathways, called Meridians, each of which is linked to a specific internal organs and organ system.\u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncturists believe that these pathways become blocked when parts of the body ceases to function properly. \u003cbr/\u003eThey insert the special needles into a number of acupoints located just under the skin. They believe there are over a thousand acupoints through the body which can be affected in this way.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, acupuncture still remains controversial among medical researchers and clinicians about its scientific basis and therapeutic effectiveness. \u003cbr/\u003eResearch published in the Parkinson''s Disease Society: Complementary Medicine study by Edzard Ernst, Professor of Complementary Medicine, of the University of Exeter in the UK has shown some Parkinson''s patients do find it beneficial, but opinion again is divided over whether or not this is do to the placebo effect. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is where the patient can experience real benefits from the belief that they are being given a beneficial treatment, regardless of whether the treatment is real. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese government has launched many recent campaigns to promote acupuncture among the Chinese population.\u003cbr/\u003eSince November 2010 acupuncture has been added to the world nonmaterial cultural heritage lists of UNESCO.\u003cbr/\u003eYang Jinhong is the professor with Institute of Acupuncture, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and she is one of the leading experts on acupuncture in China.      \u003cbr/\u003eYang says it is important to promote acupuncture among the Chinese.           \u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to have some systemic research and standardise the promotional activities of acupuncture to the public. We want to let people know more about the history and theories of Chinese acupuncture, and what kind of diseases can it cure and so on. We want to more people understand acupuncture and join us in the acupuncture practice,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eChina has set up acupuncture hospitals in all the county-level cities in the whole country, and as more professional acupuncturists are trained and more and more people understand and recognise acupuncture as an effective medical treatment, it is believed that acupuncture will see a
