She was already an accomplished, established artist in her own right. So, she really looked to Degas as someone who was interesting, innovative and challenged her. And Degas appreciated that about her, as well. Degas didn't suffer fools gladly. He was a notoriously difficult man to get along with. But he respected Cassatt. And he respected her because he recognised her talent and her commitment was on par with his own".
Cassat's talent is on display in the painting "Little Girl in a Blue Armchair."
This painting is thought by many to be Cassatt's first true impressionist painting.
And, in this painting, the hand of Degas literally appears.
After several years of tests and research, conservators are now able to point to specific changes in this painting, Little Girl in Blue Chair, that Degas made.
In a letter many years later, Cassatt recounted the history of the painting, telling a friend that Degas worked on the background, himself.
By comparing the way the background sections of the painting compare with Degas' technique, curators were able to conclude which sections Degas worked on.
He also suggested a very subtle change that dynamically alters to space of the painting explains Jones.
"All he did was introduce a very slight angle in the back of the room. Previously, the back wall had been horizontal, right to the picture plane. And, that's typical of what Cassatt does in all of her art at this point. But, by introducing that angle, which is something he does in a lot of his paintings, it opens up the space tremendously."
Cassatt's influence on Degas is a little harder to pin down.
Jones believes there are signs that Cassatt was using metallic paint in her easel paintings before Degas, and that she inspired Degas to use the material.
Another area where Cassatt influences Degas work is in a series of drawings and paintings he did of the American viewing paintings at the Louvre.
Cassatt served as a model for sketches, etchings and paintings.
The theme of Cassatt strolling through the museum clearly intrigued Degas, resulting in a single body of work over a number of years.
Amongst this collection is a portrait that Degas made of his friend.
And, as Jones says, she's sitting in a very unconventional pose.
"And so, he creates an image that focuses, not on her appearance, she was not a conventional beauty, but rather on the strength of character, her intelligence, her unconventionality. She leans forward in a pose that's almost masculine."
Degas gave his friend this unfinished portrait and she kept it until late in her life.
In other areas such as printmaking, Cassatt learned the technique from Degas
The two artists collected and championed each other's work.
Degas collected nearly 100 works by Cassatt.
On the other hand, Cassatt acted as a liaison between wealthy American buyers and the Impressionists.
But their relationship was a tempestuous according to Jones.
"Degas was a difficult character, notoriously so. Cassatt wasn't easy either. She was notoriously strong willed. And, they would have moments where they would have fights and they would not speak to each other for months, but always gravitated back to each other because there was tremendous respect. At the end of the day, they respected each other as people and as artists."
That friendship lasted until the end of their lives.
And, like true friends, their arts seems at once to both bolster, and challenge, offering the at the same time a sense of individuality as well as two kindred spirits working side by side.
The exhibition opens Sunday May 11 and runs until October at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
May 6, 2014 - Washington, DC
1.
