Pull out from Vishnu exhibition sign to wide exterior of Frist Center for the Visual Arts\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hindu God Vishnu takes centre stage at a major exhibition in the United States, the first and biggest collection of images of the deity ever assembled.\u003cbr/\u003eScores of sculptures, paintings and ritual objects show the many forms of Vishnu, one of the three most important Gods in the Hindu religion. \u003cbr/\u003eHindu mythology is rich in colourful characters like the ten-headed Ravana, king of the demons.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it is Vishnu, generally known as the Gentle God, who is most easily identified by his blue skin, representing his cool and calm nature and association with the sky and the sea.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter eleven or twelve centuries the colour may have rubbed off many of the sculptures here but Vishnu's time honoured significance is permanent.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled \"Vishnu: Hinduism's Blue-Skinned Savior\" the exhibition in Nashville's Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Tennessee is the biggest ever museum gathering of Vishnu effigies.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the curator Dr. Joan Cummins the scale of the exhibition is a major achievement in itself:\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the first exhibition dedicated to the Hindu God Vishnu to be put on on a large scale. There have been a few, small exhibitions dedicated to the topic of Vishnu in other museums, but this is the first major loan show,\" she says.  \"It's 170 objects and all of them in one way or another relate to the God Vishnu.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFounded in India more than a millenium ago Hinduism is the third biggest religion in the world with close to a billion followers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rich traditions in the worship of Vishnu over time is revealed in the variety of representations on display.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the highlights is a sandstone sculpture called \"Vishnu in his Cosmic Sleep\" a 12th Century image from Central India.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Cummins its the  star of the show - a figure of the God taking a well earned rest, having just finished the job of creating the cosmos: \u003cbr/\u003e\"There's one image of the god Vishnu reclining and creating the cosmos that is a beautiful object, but also tells quite nicely a really fundamental story about the importance of the god in the Hindu mindset and about the whole story of the cosmos,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe art reveals the many stories of Vishnu revealing one of the world's great gods to a new audience.  \u003cbr/\u003eGetting it right was critical.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Frist Center's advisory panel for the show included Hindu leaders, educators and members of Middle Tennessee's Hindu community to help plan educational activities and community events during the exhibition.   \u003cbr/\u003eRadha Babu (RAH'-dah BAH'-boo) is a member of the advisory panel. With somebody growing up in a borrowed culture, who are not exposed to their own faith just as much, it's a point of pride for them.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition is made up of three sections, arranged to capture the multiple forms in which the God appears. \u003cbr/\u003eThe section called 'Images of Vishnu' introduces his primary form, showing his blue skin in the paintings, and an upright posture in the sculptures. \u003cbr/\u003eThe second section is devoted to the ten 'Avatars of Vishnu' and reveals the complexity of his character as he assumes new forms in order to save the earth from numerous dangers. \u003cbr/\u003eAn entire room is dedicated to the avatar Krishna, because of his importance in the religion. \u003cbr/\u003eThe third section focuses on 'Worshiping Vishnu'. It includes images that depict the people who pray to Vishnu and the places where they pray.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Nashville-based arts writer MiChelle Jones, Vishnu emerges as a rich and complex character.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's interesting to look at this one deity who can have all these different forms and think about what his role in the Earth is and also just how this is continuing. It explores the many ways Hindu followers incorporate worship in their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eFive years in the making, the collection pulls together 170 works of sculpture, paintings and textiles from 40 different lenders from around the world.  It includes some rare pieces that have never been published previously or seen outside their home museums. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition \"Vishnu: Hinduism's Blue-Skinned Savior\" is open until May
