Mid of young couple\u003cbr/\u003eAn Iranian fertility clinic is attracting hundreds of childless couples from Iran - and all over the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003eThe success and low cost of treatment at the award-winning Royan Centre in Tehran has brought in patients from more than a dozen countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is where it all begins. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a well established technique where an egg is implanted with sperm in the laboratory in a last ditch effort to give unproductive couples the chance of giving birth.\u003cbr/\u003eFor thousands of Iranians and hundreds of infertile couples in Middle East the Royan Infertility and Stem Cell Research Centre in Tehran represents their only hope.\u003cbr/\u003eEstablished in 1991, Royan is now an internationally recognised Infertility and Stem Cell Research centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Royan Institute claims a high success rate of artificially assisted births.  Techniques used include IVF, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), frozen embryo birth, ICSI birth by frozen sperm of gonadectomized men, and PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis).\u003cbr/\u003eIt has also produced internationally acclaimed Stem Cell research findings.      \u003cbr/\u003eIts reputation draws patients and so does its relatively low cost of treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut being unproductive is traditionally taboo in Iranian society.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors say almost all patients are extremely sensitive about their privacy and often provide the centre with a false address.\u003cbr/\u003eA 45-year-old woman, who was interviewed on condition of anonymity, was happy to praise the centre for its effectiveness as well as its relatively low costs.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says:  \"I've been coming here for about a year and a half. It is also very reasonable in terms of quality.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) operations are the most common type of treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Mahnaz Ashrafi, a gynaecologist and professor at Tehran Medical University has been working at Royan since its establishment in 1991.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Royan institute is a very busy institute in Iran and have lots of patients that are prepared for IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation). Sometimes we have more than 20 (operations),\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eRoyan has also established a well equipped Stem Cell department - a pioneering centre of Stem Cell research in Asia sine 2002.\u003cbr/\u003eRoyan has also established an international award which is annually granted to researchers who have contributed most to stem cell research or infertility treatment techniques.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ryan Award winners are selected from one of the following fields: female infertility, andrology, embryology, genetics and stem cell biology and technology. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are five prizes totalling USD30,000 for five prominent research papers. The  winners are also awarded a merit certificate and symbol of the Royan Institute, in September every year.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Ahmad Vosough Taqi Dizaj, MD, Director of the Infertility Treatment and Research Department of Royan Institute is one of the founders of Royan.\u003cbr/\u003eNot only does the centre provide a much-needed services for Iranian couples, Dr Vosough says more than 250 couples from14 countries were admitted to Royan last year (2010). \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the cost of treatment at the Royan Institute is not comparable to European and American clinics.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"Sometimes the treatment cost of couples in Royan is 30 to 35 percent lower than the amount that patients are charged in American and European centres.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSimin Ameli is the first IVF child born to have been born as a result of treatment at the Royan Institute.
