Karl Rove walks across street\u003cbr/\u003eThere was further political fallout in Washington on Thursday over the dismissal of eight United States attorneys.\u003cbr/\u003eLate on Thursday afternoon, new e mails surfaced that showed Presidential Advisor Karl Rove raised the issue of firing all US attorneys a month sooner than previously disclosed by the White House.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, The White House is sticking to its story that the suggestion of dismissing the attorneys was all the idea of counsel Harriett Miers.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Miers was not the president's lawyer at the time the issue first surfaced in e mails and other discussions.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's also growing congressional criticism of the nation's top law enforcement officer - US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales - over his part in the firings of eight federal prosecutors.\u003cbr/\u003eDemocrats, such as New York Senator Charles Schumer, are demanding that Rove come to Capitol Hill and testify about the plan to remove the attorneys\u003cbr/\u003eE mails from top administration officials, then deputy White House counsel David Leitch and then Justice Department lawyer Kyle Sampson put Rove at the centre of the controversy and raise questions about how Gonzales has explained the matter.\u003cbr/\u003eThe e-mail exchange between Leitch and Sampson is dated early January 2005, more than a month before The White House acknowledged it was considering firing all the US attorneys and while Gonzales was still White House counsel.\u003cbr/\u003eAs Karl Rove noted Thursday afternoon in a speech in Troy, Alabama, the president has the right to fire US attorneys at any time.\u003cbr/\u003eEven Republicans are backing away from Gonzales.\u003cbr/\u003eOne Republican member of the House Judiciary Committee said he'd told White House officials that Gonzales stood \"no chance.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe lawmaker, who's not ready to speak out publicly, said he expected to be among Republicans calling for Gonzales' resignation after the Attorney General told his story on Capitol Hill.\u003cbr/\u003eRove maintains that the actions of the Bush administration are no different that those of the Clinton presidency.\u003cbr/\u003e\"These are reasonable and appropriate disagreements where the administration is justified in acting.
