Various inside a slaughterhouse \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korea and the United States began talks on Monday about lifting South Korea's two-year-old ban on imports of American beef.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two-day meeting in Seoul was not expected to lead to an immediate reopening of what was previously the third-largest market for US beef after Japan and Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said that they cannot predict how long the negotiations will take.\u003cbr/\u003eOne issue expected to dominate the discussions was whether South Korea should resume imports of beef ribs, which accounted for more than 60 percent of American beef shipments before the ban.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korea says for now it will only consider importing boneless meat, citing concerns some material inside bones could be dangerous to consume.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korean ended US beef imports in December 2003 after the first case of mad cow disease was discovered in the US.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan, which had a similar ban, recently eased its prohibition on US and Canadian beef imports after two years of negotiations and a lengthy approval process. Japan agreed to allow imports of meat from cattle younger than 21 months because no cases of mad cow disease have ever been found in cows that age.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2002, South Korea imported 213,000 tons of US beef worth 610 million (m) US dollars, according to the US Meat Export Federation.\u003cbr/\u003eAustralia and New Zealand are currently the leading beef exporters to South Korea.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists believe mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), spreads when farmers feed cattle with recycled meat and bones from infected animals.
