They are treated differently than artists from other parts of the world, they are confronted with the all the most patronising attitude. Sometimes if they go to an art gallery, the art gallery does not think it is art unless they have seen it in a museum or a book and you do not have this sort of confronting attitude to anybody else.\"\u003cbr/\u003e16. They say that what I do is western art, that is not my understanding, I have my own eyes, I have my own way of thinking, I make what I see. So in the west they believe that if you are an African artist then you have that mind of actually doing only abstracts, because that is what people assume, that that is what you can see and express. Wide of a Dutch organisation funding African artists at an art exhibition\u003cbr/\u003eArt to some in Africa is believed to be a white phenomenon that is confined to galleries and museums. \u003cbr/\u003eMany African artists have had to suffer the consequences of this perception, but the new contemporary art market is beginning to change these beliefs.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is an abundance of talented artists in Africa, but they have few forums to promote their work and to show the world what they have to offer.\u003cbr/\u003eSome artists complain that African art is seen as primitive, a notion that Kenyan contemporary artist John Silver rejects.\u003cbr/\u003eSilver says each work of African art is different in style and meaning.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he likes to tell stories on his canvas.\u003cbr/\u003eMelissa Hersey is an Australian tourist who visited an exhibition in the Kenya National Archives by the Murumbi Trust.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says back home there is very little understanding of African art, which tends to be lumped together and brushed away with a single stroke.\u003cbr/\u003eThe African Heritage building is home to Allan Donovan, Chairman of the Murumbi trust. \u003cbr/\u003eDonovan and Kenya's late former vice president Joseph Murumbi collected a vast amount of historical artifacts. \u003cbr/\u003eDonovan says that the African continent has contributed more than any other to the world of art, and regrets that African artists were treated with less respect, or none at all - just because their art is not featured in mainstream art literature or museums.\u003cbr/\u003eNevertheless, this does not discourage local artists.\u003cbr/\u003eKevin Okello is a passionate sculptor. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says art critics often say that what he creates is western art because it does not comply with western perceptions of African abstract art. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Okello says his work reflects his own thoughts and impressions and his
