Life in these cities is always in the fast lane, but according to the Slow Down London campaign, the recession is making it worse.
It says people are under pressure to work longer hours and perform better in the face of unprecedented competition for their jobs and homes.
The bridges which stretch across the River Thames into the London's financial heartland are filled each morning and evening with millions of anxious city workers.
They flock into the square mile around the Bank of England, transported by crowded overground and underground trains from surrounding towns and counties.
Their faces seem to tell the same story. Last year the British government's Health and Safety Executive revealed nearly fourteen per cent of the workforce believed their jobs were making them ill.
Other Government statistics show the number of people suffering work related mental health problems is growing at nearly six thousand a year.
All these figures are considered to be heavily underestimated.
Analytical psychotherapist James Antrican says he is seeing many more clients as a result of the economic crisis.
He says stress signals alarm and fear to our bodies. In our ancient ancestors it was a time of "fight or flight".
Over the next couple of weeks these people striding to get to work on time will be urged to slow down to a stroll.
All Londoners will be given the rare opportunity to relax and take stock of their lives. A group called Slow Down London is campaigning to bring the worldwide slow campaign to the frenetic British capital.
The concept of 'slow living' originated in Italy in the 1990s after people there feared their traditional way of life was being eroded. Since then, similar movements have sprung up across Europe.
The London event, supported by cultural bodies like the South Bank Centre and the British museum, says it wants to inspire everyone in cities worldwide to challenge the cult of speed and appreciate the world around us.
One of the directors of Slow Down London, Tessa Watt, says we don't need to flee to the rural villages to enjoy life or slow down. She says we can all enjoy the buzz (or excitement) of living in a city, but she says many of us have lost control and our adrenalin fuelled, workaholic days force us to live lives we don't want.
This is one group of Londoners refusing to get caught up in the chaotic whirl of home and work. Tai Chi and meditation classes like this one will be on offer to stressed locals, along with workshops in yoga, crafts and slow travel.
29 year old recruitment consultant James Skinner says just living has been extremely difficult because of the economic climate.
He says his job is tougher because companies are laying people off, not seeking to employ more. Skinner admits his stress levels have shot up and he took an active decision to try to relax. He's fortunate that his cousin is zen monk Julian Skinner.
Julian, who teaches meditation and Tai Chi, returned from Japan two years ago.
He argues Londoners are more stressed and isolated than the city workers he encountered in the Far East.
He says one in eight of his clients has been made redundant.
When the festival gets underway at the weekend (24 April), people walking too quickly will be given speeding tickets and encouraged to visit an art class. Over a decade ago, while on the treadmill of a career in education, she discovered she was HIV positive and pregnant.
Determined not to get ill and not to abandon her baby daughter, Hickman overhauled her life, taking up meditation, yoga and living a more serene life as an artist and gallery director.
Her paintings are aimed at making people happy and calm. Beatty says we have been so shocked by the suddenness of the economic slowdown because we live life at full tilt.
Across the room is another unfinished, larger than life model. However, this almost certainly underestimates the true incidence of these conditions in the British workforce.
According to self-reports from the LFS an estimated 237 000 people, who worked in the last 12 months, first became aware of work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2007/08, giving an annual incidence rate of 780 cases per 100 000 workers.
Estimates from the LFS indicate that self-reported work-related stress, depression or anxiety accounted for an estimated 13.5 million lost working days in Britain in 2007/08.
LFS survey data suggests the incidence rate of self-reported work-related stress, depression or anxiety has been broadly level over the years 2001/02 to 2007/08, with the exception of 2005/06 where the incidence rate was lower than all other years.
THOR surveillance data shows a mixed picture with psychiatrist reports of work-related mental health remaining stable between 2000 and 2007 but occupational physician reports showing a clear upward trend over this time period. The ONS omnibus survey shows no overall trend in the proportion of people saying their job was very or extremely stressful between 2004 and 2008.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
