Pan of empty casino\u003cbr/\u003eThe dice stopped rolling, dealers quit shuffling and slot machines fell silent Wednesday as New Jersey's casinos closed for the first time -  the latest victims of a five-day state government shutdown that showed no signs of ending soon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe problem started when the New Jersey state legislature became locked in a budget battle over a proposed sales tax increase. \u003cbr/\u003eLawmakers missed a July 1 deadline to pass a budget and with no spending plan in place, Democratic Governor Jon S. Corzine on Saturday ordered state offices shut down and all nonessential state government operations closed. \u003cbr/\u003eHe furloughed more than half the state's employees. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly about 36-thousand people in vital roles such as child welfare, state police and mental hospitals remained on the job and they were working without pay.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the state employees not being paid were casino inspectors, who keep tabs on the money.\u003cbr/\u003eSo on Wednesday, all 12 casinos in Atlantic City went dark, disappointing tourists and casino operators alike. \u003cbr/\u003eThe closures forced an estimated 20-thousand people off their jobs as dealers, pit bosses and cocktail servers.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile gambling ceased, the buildings - which also have restaurants, showrooms, stores and meeting space - stayed open. \u003cbr/\u003eBut many gamblers headed for the exits rather than stay around.\u003cbr/\u003eThe shutdown could cost the casinos more than 16 (M) million US dollars that they would normally collect from gamblers each day, not to mention the one point three (M) million dollars in taxes taken in by the state.\u003cbr/\u003eWednesday's calm was in stark contrast to the usual scene in the vibrant, open-all-night city, which was rescued from oblivion in the 1970s when city\u003cbr/\u003efathers turned to casino gambling in a last-ditch effort to revive the place once known as \"the Queen of Resorts\".\u003cbr/\u003eSince the first casino opened on May 26, 1978, the gambling business in Atlantic City has blossomed into a five (B) billion dollars-a-year juggernaut, with a dozen casinos employing 46-thousand people. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the process, gambling breathed new life into Atlantic City, providing jobs and fueling
