He says that fishing nets and river pollution are a grave threat to the dolphins who need to come up to the surface for air.
New research however indicates that Bangladesh is a global hotspot for dolphins and whales, both in its sweetwater rivers inland and along its coast, in a 900-metre underwater canyon called the Swatch of No Ground.
A local organisation called the Bangladesh Cetacean Diversity Project (BCDP) - funded by the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society, supports whale and dolphin conservation in the country.
Brian D Smith is an Associate Conservation Biologist form the Wildlife Conservation Society.
He explains why Bangladesh is a global hotspot for some dolphin and whale species.
The BCDP held their first ever exhibition on whales and dolphins of Bangladesh in Dhaka recently and drew record crowds - a total of roughly 10,000 in four days, organisers say.
Saraswati is a visitor to the exhibition. She says she never imagined that dolphins breastfed and looked after their young in the way that they do.
However, even as the abundance and diversity of the country's marine fauna is revealed, so are the threats to their survival becoming painfully evident.
Gillnet fishing for sharks and ocean bed trawling kill innumerable dolphins everyday in the Bay of Bengal - many of the trawlers belonging to Thai or Indian fishing fleets venturing in Bangladeshi waters.
Coupled with this is the decline of freshwater flows and sea level rise due to global climate change.
Elisabeth Fahrni-Mansur is the Education and Training Coordinator at the BCDP. She says that dolphin and whale conservation is directly linked to the well-being of the Bangladeshi people as they are dependent on fish as a form of protein.
Seriousness aside, the exhibition drew in plenty of children, some of whom had the opportunity to learn about dolphins through an interactive game.
Sagor came along with some of his friends. He describes what he learnt at the exhibition.
It is hoped that educating the young will go some way towards securing the future survival of the dolphin.
The Bangladesh
