Now as a result of that assessment, the US was classed as a country that had a minimum - it was not excluded that it had BSE and so the EU has had a number of protective measures in place since October 1999, to protect against the import into the EU of materials from cows that could possibly transmit BSE. EU Flag on Commission building \u003cbr/\u003eThe European Union, which already bans much American beef because of fears about growth hormones, said on Wednesday it would not take any additional measures after a cow in the US tested positive for BSE - mad cow disease. \u003cbr/\u003eAntonia Mochan, a spokeswoman at the EU Commission, said the EU had had a number of measures in place since 1999 which prevented potentially infected material from entering the bloc.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States was included in these measures, as it was seen as a potential source of BSE, she said, adding  that the Commission was \"happy with the system that we have in place\" at the moment and saw no immediate need for further restrictions on US beef exports.\u003cbr/\u003eThe EU adopted sweeping controls on beef imports following Britain's mad cow crisis, which began in the late 1980s and lead to over 100 human deaths in the UK. \u003cbr/\u003eUnder those restrictions, imports of products which are deemed high-risk, such as brains, are banned.\u003cbr/\u003eSeparately, the EU has maintained a ban on most US beef treated with growth-promoting hormones despite a 1998 ruling from the World Trade Organisation that declared the ban illegal.\u003cbr/\u003eMochan also briefly commented on Parmalat, the Italian food company, which has disclosed a 4.5 (b) billion dollar hole in its accounts.\u003cbr/\u003eBut she said the Commission would need to study rescue proposals by the Italian government before making any substantive
