Even more importantly for a democracy, the government did not provide in a timely manner accurate information on the handling of the crisis, about how many people were taken hostage, what was the number of hostage takers, what were their demands, information not only essential for the free flow of information but also for the very handling of the crisis, I think. And there was a kind of interaction between the impedimenta of the working conditions of the journalist and the hindered flow of information, namely journalists were physically attacked in Beslan by Ossetian families, by relatives of the hostages, for allegedly misinforming the public. Wide shot presser\u003cbr/\u003eRussian authorities detained and harassed journalists covering this month's bloody school standoff, a European media watchdog said on Thursday, calling their actions \"a serious drawback for a democracy\".\u003cbr/\u003eIn a report on Russia's handling of the Beslan crisis, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe's media freedom office accused Russian officials of confiscating videotapes and failing to provide truthful information in a timely manner.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, local people attacked journalists who they believed had intentionally misinformed the public or exaggerated events, said Miklos Haraszti of the OSCE's press watchdog at a news conference in Austria.\u003cbr/\u003eHaraszti's report was the latest in a growing chorus of global complaints by press freedom advocates. \u003cbr/\u003eAmnesty International, the International League of Human Rights, the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights and other groups issued a joint statement earlier this month saying Russian authorities \"concealed the true scale of the crisis\".\u003cbr/\u003eAt least 338 people were killed - nearly half of them children - when the standoff with militants who seized a school in southern Russia ended in explosions and gunfire on September 3. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities say all the hostage-takers were killed, except one suspected attacker who was detained. \u003cbr/\u003eThe militants had taken more than 12-hundred people hostage.\u003cbr/\u003eRussian and foreign media outlets struggled to make sense of \"insufficient, contradictory or incorrect information\", the OSCE report said.\u003cbr/\u003eInitial reports from officials described 10 of the militants as Arabs and another as an African, the report said.\u003cbr/\u003eThere were also numerous discrepancies between official and witness accounts on the number of extremists and how many people were being held.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal residents, irritated at what they perceived to be false reporting, beat up Alexander Kots, a correspondent for Komsomolskaya Pravda, after he erroneously wrote - based on official accounts - that only about 300 hostages were being held, the OSCE said.\u003cbr/\u003eIt said a Russian television crew also was beaten by local residents and men armed with hunting weapons who suspected the station's cameraman was an accomplice of the militants.\u003cbr/\u003eA French journalist and a Swedish cameraman also were attacked and several others were detained, the report said, citing Russian media accounts.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring and after the September 3 storming of the school, tapes showing the dramatic episode were confiscated from TV crews from Germany's ZDF and ARD, Associated Press Television News and Rustavi-2, an independent station in Georgia, the report said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report also noted that results of tests performed by a Georgian medical expert indicated that Russian authorities drugged a journalist with Rustavi-2 television who was detained covering the school standoff.\u003cbr/\u003eParis-based Reporters Without Borders has called for an
