supply water to the dry North.   \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, silt and debris in the river have begun to increase and drift offshore, although officials maintain they will be able to bring the pollution under control.\u003cbr/\u003eOne group directly affected by the anticipated change in the river ecology are fishermen, and many believe dozens of wild species will perish as their habitat changes.\u003cbr/\u003eLiu Guangji has been fishing in the Three Gorges for more than 30 years, but says his profits are now dropping because his most profitable commodities such as bream, white eel and soft-shelled turtles are disappearing. \u003cbr/\u003eChinese sturgeon, which live in the upper streams of the Yangtze, are also under threat, and now the species is being bred in aqua-farms.\u003cbr/\u003eYu Wei, an aqua-farm owner, said she started to farm Chinese sturgeon two years ago when she realised the fish in the Yangtze River were disappearing. \u003cbr/\u003eYu's farm is at the foot of a mountain where a small branch of the Yangtze passes, where people travel hundreds of miles from cities along Yangtze river to enjoy the fish they can no longer find in their hometown.\u003cbr/\u003eYu is looking to farm other species of fish, and last year bought a giant salamander from a fisherman on the Yangtze river. \u003cbr/\u003eGiant salamander are high on China's list of endangered species.\u003cbr/\u003eFish who live in the cold waters at the upper stream of the Yangtze and swim down to the warmer lower stream waters to produce their eggs are also affected. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce the eggs grow to small fish, they have to swim back upstream where they will turn into adults.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now it is claimed the dam makes the journey impossible and the fish can no longer reproduce.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the project began to flood the waters in Yichang, critics have warned of a potential ecological disaster.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a rare admission, officials said on Thursday that cracks found in the dam could leak if not fixed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe comments contrasted with government claims that the dam on the Yangtze river had been a success since its reservoir began to fill on June 1. \u003cbr/\u003eInspectors have found about 80 cracks in the dam's surface, said Pan Jiazhong, head of the construction committee inspection group, and added that while they weren't a threat to safety, they could expand and cause leaking if not repaired.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese officials say the dam will control chronic flooding on the Yangtze and produce power needed by industry, but critics say the dam is a waste of money and could worsen pollution by trapping sewage and industrial waste. \u003cbr/\u003ePlans call for the reservoir's water level eventually to rise
