We know of some species that have disappeared because of humans. But again fortunately there are not so many. Various shots of museum exhibition of embalmed local species\u003cbr/\u003eCenturies of human activity in the Greek island of Crete have caused some changes to its ecosystem.\u003cbr/\u003eBut so far the island's rich and diverse flora and fauna have proved fairly resilient to human disruption.\u003cbr/\u003eSmall coves, sandy beaches, deep gorges, isolated plateaux. They join  the numerous mountain ranges to shape the Cretan landscape.\u003cbr/\u003eCrete is the largest of the Greek islands as well as the fifth in size in the Mediterranean Sea.\u003cbr/\u003eMount Ida - the highest point in Crete - is surrounded by valleys carpeted with olive trees and grazing goats.\u003cbr/\u003eThe valleys are home to a wide variety of flora including more than 130 indigenous herbs and wild flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eKalous Paragamian is the local delegate for World Wildlife Fund (WWF).\u003cbr/\u003eParagamian says that considering the massive development that has taken place on Crete over centuries humans haven't so far caused much irreversible damage to the local wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is amazing to find out that the ecosystem in the island of Crete is not as fragile as it happens with much smaller islands. Mainly the coastal wetlands which have been suffering very much during the last decades.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCrete has 1,046 kilometres (650 miles) of coastline. \u003cbr/\u003eTourists and locals alike are often guilty of polluting the surrounding waters with rubbish and debris.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mediterranean Sea is rich with marine life.\u003cbr/\u003eDamsel fish (Chromis Chromis) are often seen in large schools around the coast.\u003cbr/\u003eGreen Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) pass Greek waters on their way to nesting sites in Turkey.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are forty-seven shark species in the Mediterranean, most of them around Crete.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local Moray eel (Muraena Helena), usually deep water dwellers, can also be found in shallow coastal waters in Crete.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Dusky Grouper (epninephelus marginatus) is a rare species with a lifespan of more than sixty years.\u003cbr/\u003eAquaworld is Crete's only aquarium.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite its relatively small size it is tipped as one of the best in Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eThalia Polycrhonaki is a marine biologist from Aquaworld.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says despite poor environmental education in the past, Cretans are now getting more conscious about what goes on underwater.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The public have become more aware of conditions in the Mediterranean. Because we see in different activities, like overfishing that have reduced some species.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe local fishing industry consists of a fleet of small and medium size vessels.\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite its relatively small size, overfishing in past decades have caused fishing stock to get smaller and smaller.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Natural History Museum in Heraklion there are embalmed samples of the fauna of Crete.\u003cbr/\u003eIn prehistoric times the island was inhabited by pygmy elephants and hippos as well as wild cows.\u003cbr/\u003eToday the fauna is far less exotic but nevertheless in good state of preservation.\u003cbr/\u003ePetros Lynbrakis, a researcher from the University of Crete, says the good health Crete's wildlife has enjoyed is down to the size and isolation of micro environments that have enabled species to have a relatively unharmed existence away from human activity.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The truth is that humans have caused some and fortunately very few irreversible changes.
