Close of pine cone on ground in snow\u003cbr/\u003eA record-breaking summer snowpack in the picturesque Sierra Nevada Mountains is causing flood concerns for Central California, but drought-ravaged western states welcome all the water.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 40 inches of snow fell in the mountains in May alone - that's the most snow ever recorded this close to summer, and the picture perfect landscape could turn dangerous should a heat wave or summer storm melt it all at once.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite being mid June the Sierra Nevada mountains in California are still crowned with snow.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tree-lined slopes have as much as seven feet of snow piled up in some places.\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite all the snow, the ski slopes are deserted and the chair lifts remain static. After all, nobody expected the winter sports season to last well into June.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead of piste-life, pleasure seekers are sun bathing along the region's picturesque lakes. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the snowy landscapes, warm weather and flowing rivers are a perfect inspiration for local artists.\u003cbr/\u003eSusan Bloom puts the finishing touches to her latest work - painted on location in California's Tahoe National Forest park.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"It's just the best time of year, actually. The temperature is great. We're glad to finally have the warm temperatures, and the river this year is amazing because we still have so much snow. In fact, it was just snowing a couple of weeks ago.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut the abundant snowmelt in the Sierra Nevadas and mountains in Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado provide more than just great outdoor recreation.\u003cbr/\u003eIt could also prevent residents of Nevada, California, and Arizona from rationing water.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter more than ten years of receding water levels that threatened a regional water shortage, this year's melting snows are expected to significantly grow Lake Mead, the nation's largest reservoir located outside Las Vegas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lake is the chief source of water for the three states and Mexico. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal water officials say the melt is coming at a crucial time for the Southwest, which was on the verge of having to implement emergency measures like water rationing for businesses, farmers, and residents. \u003cbr/\u003eBut although tourists, artists and the southern states might be enjoying the unseasonal snow - it's not such good news for California's residents who fear a flash flood.\u003cbr/\u003eThe staff at California's Flood Operations Center in Sacramento is monitoring the snowmelt daily, but there is only so much they can do once the ground is fully saturated and the state's reservoirs and irrigation channels fill up.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Imagine pouring water over a sponge,\" says Arthur Hinojosa, a hydrologist for the California Division of Flood Management. \"If the sponge is dry, none of that water is going over. But if you soak the sponge first, it's all just going to work its way out.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHinojosa says there is a lot of uncertainty year to year, even in years when the runoff is
