An elder statesman and anti-apartheid hero, accused of raping an HIV positive woman. \u003cbr/\u003eThe accuser, a Zuma family friend, alleges he raped her at his home in Johannesburg last November.\u003cbr/\u003eZuma, 64, acknowledges having unprotected sex with the woman, but says it was consensual.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial has highlighted lingering misconceptions about HIV in a country where up to 6 million people are estimated to have the AIDS-causing virus.\u003cbr/\u003eZuma told the court he was not infected with HIV and had unprotected sex because he thought there was only minimal risk for a man of catching the virus from a woman. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also said he took the shower immediately after the sexual encounter. \u003cbr/\u003eThe media speculated that this act was an attempt to reduce his chances of catching the virus.\u003cbr/\u003eZuma''s actions and comments have angered AIDS activists and organisations working in HIV/AIDS prevention. \u003cbr/\u003eThe former deputy president was also formerly Head of the moral regeneration campaign, and chairperson of the National Aids Council.\u003cbr/\u003eMost NGO''s working in South Africa in AIDS awareness say the publicity surrounding the Zuma trial has taken the campaign to educate young people  about HIV/ AIDS prevention about \" 20 steps back\" and that damage control was now necessary.  \u003cbr/\u003eZuma, a veteran of the ANC (African National Congress) struggle to end apartheid was once a favourite to become South Africa''s next president. \u003cbr/\u003eHis supporters say the rape charge is part of a plot to destroy his lingering hopes of becoming president. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was fired last year and goes on trial in July on corruption charges but remains deputy president
