Pan up of rubbish on ground
Is waste really waste?
That's the question one forward-thinking Ethiopian is challenging.
Solomon Haile Mariam is an entrepreneur on a mission to preserve the environment.
He's pioneered a project to transform rubbish into an alternative fuel, which he claims will help reduce pollution levels while reducing the capital's colossal landfill sites.
Ethiopia is one of the poorest counties in the world situated on the northern horn of Africa (Source: United Nations )
Poverty and environmental degradation are closely intertwined in Ethiopia, but one man is on a mission to teach people how to preserve the environment.
Climate change and preserving the environment are at the bottom of most poor Ethiopians' priority list.
As a result, giant landfill sites continue to pile up along roads near the capital.
Some 1,500 m3 of waste is produced in Addis Ababa every day from the more than seven million inhabitants (Source -Sub-City Administration Office, Local Government)
It's not only polluting the environment but damaging local communities' health.
In addition, it's estimated that only 15% of the waste is recycled (Source -Sub-City Administration Office, Local Government)
But thanks to Solomon Haile Mariam, whose motto is: "all waste can be reutilised", everything is about to change.
Solomon has pioneered an alternative fuel using waste rubbish.
He hopes his new project will offer Ethiopians a financial incentive to recycle.
Ethiopia has a long dependence on charcoal as its main source of energy.
But over cultivation has contributed to the depilation of Ethiopia's trees.
Poor communities would traditionally cut down trees to make charcoal to sell at market.
Tsegay Ghebremariam, the Environment Protection Chief, says Solomon's new project will allow Ethiopians to recycle waste and use it as an alternative fuel.
Solomon aims to teach Ethiopians to no longer look at waste as waste, but instead as a resource and a way to improve their lives both economically and environmentally.
Solomon says if people stop cutting down trees the air will be cleaner and communities healthier.
The former carpenter has devised a plan to buy and collect solid organic waste from households in Addis Ababa and convert it in to what he calls 'smokeless' charcoal.
Everything from wood, paper, food and bones can be gathered, separated and then put in to the furnace's inner cylinder.
The air around the cylinder is heated up turning rubbish into charcoal.
Once the waste has been transformed it will be crushed in to a powder using a special 'compactor' machine.
Solomon's machine is only a miniature version of the real thing but he hopes to develop a full scale version.
The Federal Environment Protection Authority saw the potential in Solomon's scheme and gave him a 2,000 m2 plot of land which will house a 120 sq m, size furnace.
Solomon says the project has already been a success.
Ghebremariam hopes that by exchanging waste for money, people will be deterred from cutting down trees.
Solomon claims his methods will get rid of the moisture in the charcoal and therefore prevent the release of carbon monoxide when the charcoals burnt.
He has already patented his idea and has won a Green Award from the government.
Azeb Girma, Environmental expert says fuel is a scarce commodity in ethiopia and salmons scheme is a great contribution to the country.
Solomon is also contributing to millennium Development Goal' Number 7:to ensure environmental sustainability and he's proud.
He plans to eventually process 2,500 kilogrammes (0.0025 Tonne) of waste in the furnace every day.
Solomon says he invested $15,000 US Dollars to develop the pilot-project and hope to make the scheme official in March 2007.
There are plans to set up collecting centres in each of Addis Ababa's 10 'sub-cities where families can exchange their organic house-hold waste for cash.
Inorganic waste such as glass, metal and plastic will be sent to respective processing plants for recycling.
This will also create hundreds of new jobs as mainly youngsters will be recruited as 'collectors'.
The new waste charcoal burns hotter, longer and cleaner than wood and so it's hoped it'll be more appealing
