Worker picking leaves from plant\u003cbr/\u003eThe Holy Land is at the forefront of research into growing and administering medical cannabis.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe industry has shot up over the past seven years, with more than ten thousand patients now permitted to consume the drug.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael's Tikun Olam farm is tucked away in the plush biblical land of Galilee. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's one of the first and largest medical marijuana farms in the region, and over the last decade, Israel has become one of the leading countries for growing medical cannabis. \u003cbr/\u003eMarijuana is illegal in Israel but medical use has been permitted since the early nineties for cancer patients and those with pain-related illnesses such as Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, and even post-traumatic stress disorder. \u003cbr/\u003eFor patients who don't prefer or can't smoke, the drug can be eaten or ingested in liquid form. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year the company developed a marijuana strain with all the reported medical benefits of cannabis, but without THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive chemical component that causes a high. The cannabis is instead made with high quantities of CBD (cannabidiol), a substance that is believed be an anti-inflammatory ingredient.\u003cbr/\u003eDue to advancements in the industry, Israeli doctors cite an uptake in the past five years in acceptance and distribution of cannabis as a medical treatment. While Israel had only a few hundred users in 2005, now more than 10,000 patients have a government permit to consume the drug.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Itay Goor Aryeh of the Sabah Medical centre says \"the THC was discovered in Israel by Professor Meshulam, also lots of research on CBD was done here at the Weitzman Institute so we are really on the cutting edge also on the basic science of cannabis.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBut because the FDA and other medical institutions do not officially recognize cannabis as a medicine, practitioners say the treatment hasn't been researched and regulated as much as it should. Doctors like Aryeh hope this happens soon.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's the right thing ( for it to be approved for medicine) , yes, it has to be researched more, it has to be regulated more, yes it has to be development in the sense that we will know what we're giving the patient, what strains are better, what is the relationship between the CBD and THC and so on and so forth, but if you don't allow it, you will never know.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMuch to the chagrin of major pharmaceutical companies, Aryeh and other doctors cite the practice as cost-effective, dramatically reducing patients' needs for other pain medications that usually produce negative side effects. \u003cbr/\u003eDavid Itzhak, a patient at the Pain Management Centre, says \"The Cannabis helps me, it helps me reduce by twenty milligrams the dose of Oxycontin, and I take it at night before I go to sleep, I smoke the cannabis, I've been on it for four months and it helps me.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe medical usage of cannabis has few detractors in Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country's recreational drug usage ranks relatively high and cannabis use is mentioned in the Old Testament, so Israel's influential religious institutions do not reject the practice.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"One of the ways we know it helps, we are giving it to old people, relatively very old people in their 80's,\" says Areyeh, \"So it's not just someone young and people say 'She just wants to get high.' Those people suffer from pain all the time, so we give them the medication and they come, and they've been taken off other medication that they've been taking and they say that it brings them back to life.\" \u003cbr/\u003eA majority of the residents at Hadarim Nursing Home in Kibbutz Naan use the cannabis produced by Tikun Olam farm and say the drug has changed their lives. \u003cbr/\u003eMoshe Rute is an 80-year-old Holocaust survivor who suffered a stroke a few years ago. Once a prolific artist, he was unable to use his hands to write or draw. When his wife died, he suffered debilitating nightmares about the Holocaust. After smoking for two years, Rute says he's a new man. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The cannabis helps me, my hands are a lot more stable, I eat better and I'm a lot more patient and quiet,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eFor pain patients like Rivke Holobe, 85, who suffers from lung problems, the cannabis is administered with food once a day. It's become clockwork for residents who see it as necessary fixture of their days. \u003cbr/\u003e\"One of my colleagues told me about this patient,\" laughs Aryeh, \"She told him 'Listen doctor, it's great, I take the medication, I have no pain, I'm doing great, and not only that, my grandchildren come to visit me every weekend.'\"\u003cbr/\u003eRivke says she had never even heard of cannabis until a few years ago and was surprised to find it alleviated her chronic arthritis.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the home's 36 residents, doctors say traditional medicine left many of them with equally crippling side effects and a loss of appetite. \u003cbr/\u003eResidents like Rom Germad who can't smoke visit a vaporizer room once a day. Head nurse Inbal Sikorin says she's not using most of what she learned in nursing school, but the benefits for her patients are undeniable.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of the time they ( the patients)  stop eating, their appetite suffers, there are reasons which make it very difficult for them to eat, and we wanted to check if the cannabis would solve this problem,\" she says. \"Because we know how to extend life, but inserting a tube for forced feeding - it's something that causes a great deal of suffering, so we're looking to alleviate this, to add quality to longevity, and cannabis meets this need.\" \u003cbr/\u003eMoshe and other residents say the cannabis may not change their realities, but cannabis makes the realities easier to accept. \u003cbr/\u003eBack at the Tikun Olam farm, practioners say this is just the tip of the iceberg. They hope to increase accessibility of what they call a wonder drug, with plans to eventually export. \u003cbr/\u003e The ministry may allow distribution of medical marijuana through pharmacies beginning next year. Such accessibility - and acceptance - would be a hugely significant development for a drug that once symbolised counter-culture and youthful
