You can see whether it's polluted because the sunlight through your window, whether you want to look out your window or not. And it's gotten so bad that I don't really want to look out the window anymore. I just close the curtains. Wide shot of Hope riding 'Breathing Bicycle'\u003cbr/\u003eSmog shrouding much of eastern China has caused flights to be cancelled, and residents with breathing difficulties have been told to stay indoors. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to some readings, the pollution levels were \"beyond index\". \u003cbr/\u003eBut one British man in Beijing has come up with a unique way to ride through the polluted air. \u003cbr/\u003eBeijing's persistent pollution and smog has forced many residents to stay indoors in recent days. \u003cbr/\u003eBut British bicyclist Matt Hope is braving the smoggy streets on his invention, a bike which feeds clean air to the rider as it is propelled along.\u003cbr/\u003eJust when many inhabitants of Beijing's capital barricade themselves at home or hide behind anti-pollution masks, Hope hits the streets on his 'Breathing Bicycle'.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People try to breath through something that takes everything away,\" explains Hope. \"But the idea of this contraption is that it cleans the air for you and it's also self-powered.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHis 'Breathing Bicycle' started as an art project with an environmental message, drawing attention to the worrying trend of people abandoning bicycles in favour of pollution-generating cars.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Beijing-based artist is thinking now of ways to perfect its mechanics.\u003cbr/\u003eWith proper scientific assessment, Hope says, the apparatus could even be put into mass-production and help solve the city's air pollution problem.\u003cbr/\u003eHope explains how he put together the bike.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I had a spare electricity generator, and then I went to Walmart, and I got this bike for 200 RMB ($32 US dollars) and then I fitted the generator on, and then I was making another thing at my studio which was an air cleaning machine and then I thought that it would be much more interesting if I could connect that with the bike, so as you are pedalling you are providing your own clean air.\"\u003cbr/\u003eArmed with a spare electricity generator he attaches it to a dynamo attached to a 200 RMB bicycle ($32 US dollars). \u003cbr/\u003eAnother gadget spins up the voltage of the electricity, charging the dust particles that are filtered through the net of an IKEA dustbin.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In effect, it's an ionizer,\" the artist explains, showing how the air ends up fanned down through a conduit all the way to a fighter pilot's mask.\u003cbr/\u003eThe result is a post-industrial looking rider that raises eyebrows among other commuters in Beijing's streets. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it is perhaps appropriate to the concept of 'airpocalypse' that has become a buzzword during the latest bout of smog in China's capital.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The main idea people do is to try and breath through something and that takes everything away. And then it's also self-powered,\" says Hope.\u003cbr/\u003eAir pollution has long been a problem in Beijing, but the public has become more sensitive as the government has reluctantly agreed to release more accurate statistics.\u003cbr/\u003eReadings of PM2.5  have skyrocketed in the last few weeks beyond previously known limits.\u003cbr/\u003ePM2.5  are tiny particles of pollution which are considered the most harmful to health because they are small enough that penetrate people's lungs. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the day this story was filmed, the US Embassy reported an hourly peak level of PM2.5 at 526 micrograms per cubic metre, or \"beyond index\", and more than 20 times higher than World Health Organisation safety levels over a 24-hour period.\u003cbr/\u003eBeijing's official readings for PM2.5 were lower than the embassy's - 433 micrograms per cubic metre at one point in the afternoon - but even that level is considered \"severe\" and prompted the city government to advise residents to stay indoors as much as possible.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The primary idea was also make people in other countries and where I come from in England, make realise what is like here, and then this is kind of like my reaction to that. So it's an old problem but in a new circumstance,\" Hope says about his bike.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, light snow falling through smog made the city seem more post-apocalyptic than ever.\u003cbr/\u003eTalk about the pollution dominates street conversation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People in China put up with that every day,\" Hope says. \"In the UK it was 50 years ago was like this. So it's an old problem but in a new circumstance.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn a world where art has become a tool scrutinise reality with a critical eye, Hope's art employs industrial objects from China's factories, and puts them into different, often unexpected uses.\u003cbr/\u003eTrained in arts and sculpture in United Kingdom and United States, Hope mechanically and electrically connects fans, screws, speaker systems, solar panels, small Lego pieces as well as huge concrete blocks, and all kinds of vehicles parts, turning them into installations.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2007, Hope moved to China, where adapted his art's connection to his surroundings and, especially, to environmental degradation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's slightly depressing too,\" he says about the latest smog crisis in Beijing. \"It's gotten so bad that I don't really want to look out of the window anymore.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs many others in Beijing, Hope has opted for closing the curtains. \"But I find that a little bit
