Wide of market\u003cbr/\u003eMexican Agriculture officials on Thursday defended Mexican peppers as safe to eat and said the United States made a rushed decision to single out the produce as the cause of a salmonella outbreak before concluding its probe.\u003cbr/\u003eMexico's National Sanitation and Farm Food Quality Service director Enrique Sanchez said that a test sample which the US claimed contains a strain of the food-borne illness was taken from an inactive water tank.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The announcement made yesterday by the FDA (Food and Drug Admistration) with regard to their investigation of Serrano chilies here in Mexico lacks provable scientific evidence that would allow them to establish that the precise origin is where they say it is,\" Sanchez said.\u003cbr/\u003eSanchez told a news conference on Thursday that the water tank hadn't been used for irrigating crops for more than two months.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the tank held rain water and suggested that roaming cattle or some other contamination could have introduced the strain to the tank since then.\u003cbr/\u003eThe strain has sickened 1,300 people in the United States since June.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, Dr. David Acheson, the Food and Drug Administration's food safety chief, described the finding of the salmonella strain at a farm in the northern state of Nuevo Leon as a key breakthrough in the case.\u003cbr/\u003eSanchez said that announcement lacked scientific evidence and that US officials had broken a confidentiality agreement by announcing results before their probe was completed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The sample that they took there is not scientifically valid,\" Sanchez said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Even if they have found salmonella there, or even ten kinds of salmonella, it's not linked to the chile. conference.\u003cbr/\u003ePreviously, the FDA had traced a contaminated jalapeno pepper to a farm in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth farms shipped through a packing facility in Nuevo Leon, raising the possibility that contamination could have occurred there.\u003cbr/\u003eThe FDA has advised consumers to avoid raw serrano peppers from Mexico, in addition to raw jalapeno peppers from Mexico, and any foods that contain them.\u003cbr/\u003eSanchez said Mexico produced 2.4 (m) million tons of peppers per year and of that only 12-thousand tons were exported to the US. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother 267-thousand tons of canned or bottle peppers were also sent to the US each year, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eSanchez said pepper exports hadn't stopped, but  US authorities were taking samples from the shipments at the border and holding them up for up to week until test results were ready.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said officials had not yet determined the scale of the impact on the
