A group of doctors claims the disease that caused the wholesale collapse of Britain's beef...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eCritics of America's beef industry are raising new concerns over the dangers of mad cow disease and its human equivalent in the U-S. \u003cbr/\u003eA group of doctors claims the disease that caused the wholesale collapse of Britain's beef industry, is present in the U-S. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're calling for tougher industry and government measures to safeguard the public from the dangers they say American meat products pose.\u003cbr/\u003eWith more than a hundred million cattle in the United States and an industry worth (b )billions of dollars, the potential consequences of an outbreak of B-S-E or mad-cow disease in the United States would be catastrophic.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that disaster scenario could become a reality according to a group of medical doctors who presented their findings to the press in Washington on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe doctors are advocating strong measures to ban the use of feeds made from animal remains - the same kind of feeds that are believed to have caused mad cow disease in Britain. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say the use of animal-based feeds and certain meat-processed techniques used in America, pose a similar threat to public health.\u003cbr/\u003e\"All of the factors that led to the emergence of mad cow disease, and we believe to human deaths, are present in the United States right now, and have been so long enough that there is every reason to be concerned about the possibility of a similar outbreak in the United States.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr Neal Barnard, President, Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine\u003cbr/\u003eThey admit their research is not complete. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the doctors say the evidence suggests that the same agent that causes mad cow disease has already spread to some farm animals in the U-S.\u003cbr/\u003eThe advocacy group is pressing the beef industry, and federal regulators, to strengthen a ban on the use of animal-based feeds - the ban is currently voluntary.\u003cbr/\u003eBut they would also go much further. \u003cbr/\u003eThey argue that Americans should refrain altogether from eating meat because of a variety of health problems they say are caused by meat products.\u003cbr/\u003e\"But I think what is important is that Americans should be made aware of - one, the true risks associated with eating meat, and two, that there is no physiological need for them to eat meat, that they can be perfectly healthy not eating meat, and or significantly reducing the amount of meat that they include in their diet.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr Milton Mills, Washington, D-C General Hospital\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials of the beef industry say they too are pressing for a complete ban on the use of feed from animal remains.\u003cbr/\u003eBut they contest the claims that mad cow disease poses a threat to Americans. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say the conditions which led to its rise in Great Britain do not exist in the U-S.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd they dispute claims that cattle breeds said to carry the disease in Canada and Britain, some of which may have been cross bred with U-S cattle, pose a threat in America.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have not imported any live cattle from Great Britain since 1989, and those cattle have been identified and traced and there have been no cases of B-S-E (Bovine spongiform encephalopathy) in those animals.
