It provoked a big depression, and she left Mexico for California and lived in the house of her friend Ella Wolfe. During her stay there she painted this portrait and then she gave it away. What is special about this painting is that Frida Kahlo cut her hair as an act of protest against Diego Rivera, who loved her long hair. She also changed her typical Mexican clothing to European. Close up Diego Rivera painting \"Vendedoras en el mercado\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe highlight of this season's Latin American Sale at Christie's Auction House in New York is Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait with Curly Hair from 1935. \u003cbr/\u003eone of only a handful of Kahlo's self-portraits that portray her with short hair.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was at this time when Kahlo first discovered that her husband, the artist Diego Rivera, was engaged in an affair with her younger sister Cristina.  Emotionally distraught and seeking retribution, she cropped her signature long hair and moved out to an apartment in the centre of Mexico City.\u003cbr/\u003eThis self-portrait was a gift from the artist to Ella Wolfe, a friend and confidante who encouraged Kahlo to pursue her art, especially during her troubled marriage to Rivera and after the loss of her child.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow a highly sought-after artist among collectors and the subject of numerous books and a major motion picture, this painting is a symbol of Kahlo's legacy as both an artistic and social
