Pull out from solar boat sailing in Darling Harbour
Solar powered ferries currently sailing in Sydney are soon to become a frequent sight in and around Hong Kong''s natural harbour.
At the moment only fuel-heavy noisy ferries transport passengers around the city and its outlying islands.
The solarsailor - it''s silent and environmentally friendly.
This prototype for a hybrid solar ferry is moored in Sydney''s Darling Harbour.
The boat harnesses energy from both the sun and wind.
It features fixed solar receptors on the front and moving panels above, which also act as sails to generate wind power.
The design is the brainchild of Solar Sailor Chief Executive and Founder Robert Dane, who developed the technology with a team of engineers and the backing of former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke.
Dane says the boat uses a combination of different power sources, including sunlight, wind and diesel fuel, depending on its energy needs.
"It''s like the hybrid car in the sense that when you''re going at low speeds or manoeuvring, it uses the electricity and the solar power, and then when you go over a certain speed, which is around about 6 knots (7 miles / hr or 11 km/hr) , then we switch on the diesel fuel and we use that. So the boat is never without power - it always has energy to drive the propellers."
The solar panels are designed to angle themselves towards the sun, and are placed on an aerofoil wing-shaped sail, creating a single device which both captures solar power and sails in the wind.
The boat''s batteries charge via the solar panels and can store energy for use in cloudy or dark conditions.
A computer system keeps track of the solar power being generated by the boat, allowing the skipper to plan its journeys using a combination of green energy and fuel.
Each boat will be capable of carrying 100 passengers and 60 golf bags, and will be able to reach speeds of 6 knots (7 miles / hr or 11 km/hr) using renewable electric (solar and wind) power, and 16 knots (18 miles/ hr or 20 kilometres/per hr) in total.
Although these boats will service only a small market, Dane believes the solar ferry technology he has created has a bright future in the larger shipping industry.
"I think the big ships, the tankers and the bulkers and the cruise ships, this sort of technology will, I think, revolutionise the industries. Because these sort of vessels use huge amounts of fuel, and the shipping industry right now makes twice the carbon emissions as the airline industry."
He adds that the unpredictability of oil prices makes renewable energy a sound investment.
"No-one is forgetting the oil crisis of last year where oil was 140 (USD) dollars a barrel, and everybody in the industry knows that as the world recovers, and Russia and India and China start driving cars, then the price of oil will go up again."
The volume of requests has reduced along with the price of oil, but the company is still in discussions with several possible clients, and has signed a contract with the US Navy to develop unmanned ocean vehicles.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club has ordered four of the boats to ferry its users from the city''s often heavily polluted harbour to its golf course.
The vessels are currently being constructed in China, and they''re expected to begin service in Hong Kong in Spring 2010, bringing golfers and other visitors across the city''s harbour.
Cameron Halliday is General Manager of the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau in Hong Kong.
He says that ferries that run on renewable energy are perfect for short journeys.
"Well I think when we first considered this kind of technology for our ferry service, we looked at the particular application of our service, which was a 20 minute service with a high amount of turnaround i.e. berthing into the ferries and backwards and forwards.
