Mid of shoppers next to fridges\u003cbr/\u003eIncreased exports and European Union (EU) production quotas were blamed for this week's hike of prices of milk and butter in Germany. \u003cbr/\u003eCustomers in the Germany will now pay up to 10 percent more for their milk and the price of butter is expected to rise by 50 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eInternational, especially Asian, demand for European milk exports has in recent years grown steadily.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Chinese are buying European milk powder, the dairy products are exported worldwide and the prices are rising,\" said Hubertus Pellengahr, from Germany's Retail Association. \u003cbr/\u003eBut as demand grows steadily farmers are being prevented from producing more by the EU production quotas introduced back in the early eighties. \u003cbr/\u003eMangeldorf pointed to the quotas that limit the amount of milk farmers are allowed to produce as being a root cause of the price hikes. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The European Union does not allow production to be increased, there are quotas in the EU and therefore the prices have to rise, and the customer is the one paying the bill,\" he said\u003cbr/\u003eThe EU milk quotas were imposed in 1984 and are in force until 2015. In order to deal with the limits on production, farmers have had to pass on the cost to German consumers.\u003cbr/\u003eMost German consumers were not pleased with the price hikes.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I do not think the milk consumption will drop drastically\" said one Berlin resident, \"but I find it a pity that the price of milk and coffee will go up\". \u003cbr/\u003eSome shoppers blamed it all on the EU quotas.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People should be allowed to have more cows and there would be no problem with milk,\" a woman said.\u003cbr/\u003eJohan Mangeldorf a dairy farmer from Beekstow not far from Berlin urged people to remain calm. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the price will be stabilised again and although we're now ten percent over the all-time low, the prices are still lower than they were in the midst of the BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, commonly known as mad cow disease) crisis,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eGermany is Europe's largest milk producer and pours out 27 (b) billion litres every year some of it ends up on supermarket shelves in China.\u003cbr/\u003eChina does not have a tradition of dairy farming. A recent increase in the demand for dairy products means a third of the milk produced worldwide is now being sold on supermaket shelves across the
