Kim, Director of the Aga Khan Museum says that far from being a single civilisation Islam is a varied collection of different cultures drawn from across the world and down more than ten centuries.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most people perceive Islam as a monolith. But the one thing you'll see from our art objects on display is that Islamic art is all about a cultural mosaic. There are so many different cultures that are present in our galleries and the geographic range is everywhere from Spain in the west straight through to China and Indonesia in the east. The time period is over 1,400 years, and so this is a major part of world art which most have very little exposure to.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the more outstanding illuminated books on display is the Islamic equivalent of Aesop's Fables. A book of moral tales that uses animals to give extra power to its stories.\u003cbr/\u003eRuba Kana'an, Head of Education and Scholarly Programmes at the Aga Khan Museum describes the book that tells of the marvellous, humorous but frequently disastrous interactions between various animal world to drive home moral stories.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This manuscript that we see here is called the Anwari Souhail or the Lights of Canopus. It's a manuscript that dates from the 16th Century but its topic is incredibly interesting because it's something that we all relate to from different cultures. It's animal fables that are told by two jackals who keep narrating stories and through that give morals at the end of each story.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMetalwork is chosen for its artistic value as well as for the insights into metalwork industries and the societies tin which these objects were produced. \u003cbr/\u003eMost are made of a variations of brass or bronze alloy, but not all.\u003cbr/\u003eFiliz Cakir Phillip, Associate Curator at the Aga Khan Museum describes an Ottoman Turkish candlestick. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This candlestick is approximately from the 14th Century, early 14th Century. We came to this idea because we have an inscription on the candlestick which also bears the name of the Ihanite ruler Bahaddos - Sultan, and it's made of copper and zinc, and it has geometric motifs and sun motifs on it, and we have the idea that the sun motif could be related to the most famous Konye poet JalÄl ad-DÄ«n Muhammad RÅ«mÄ«  and his MatnawÄ«ye.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe museum collection gives a sense of an empire that stretches across great swathes of the globe and encompasses many different objects some merely beautiful, other with a practical use.\u003cbr/\u003eHenry S. Kim, Director of the Aga Khan Museum says that an astrolabe from Islamic Spain is his favourite object because it brings all the major monotheistic religions together.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A fantastic piece of art, a fantastic piece of scientific instrument, which is effectively one of the earliest computers. But what's remarkable about this object is that it has inscribed on it, inscriptions in both Arabic, and Latin which shows you Christians and Muslims living side by side in Spain in the 14th Century. It also has scratched on it inscriptions in Hebrew.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlso on display is a large, ornate and original object from Egypt that used water to keep the house cool during the burning hot Cairo summer. \u003cbr/\u003eChurchil Otieno, a visitor from Kenya says he is surprised that such a \"green\" cooling system existed so long ago.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I saw a piece, a marble piece that was used in a courtyard in Egypt, And it brings many interesting notions. For instance, today the world is grappling with green technology, green life and this piece was able to use water to air condition those spaces those many years ago. It's just amazing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMore than half of the objects on display originate from Iran - many of them miniature paintings. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the most outstanding is 'The Court of the Keyomars' by Sultan Mohammad Tabriz, ca. 1552.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Aga Khan museum represents a rich tapestry woven from various strands including portraits, textiles, lustrous ceramics and medical instruments.\u003cbr/\u003eKim refers to the continental-wide nature of Islamic artistry and culture down the ages.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Everyone talks about the east and the west and they think about Europe and China.
