Various of metro, including aerials ++mute++\u003cbr/\u003eDubai opened the Arabian Peninsula's first metro system on Wednesday, hoping to capture the world's spotlight on the catchy date of 9/9/09 - whether the sleek system was fully ready to go or not.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rapid transit line has been slotted together at breakneck speed, much like the often traffic-clogged city it aims to serve. \u003cbr/\u003eIn true Dubai style, it even promises a VIP section for higher-paying customers who don't want to mix with the rest of the public.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials are eager to portray the 7.6 billion (b) US dollar project as a rare piece of good news amid the negative press that's swamped the sheikdom. \u003cbr/\u003eDubai's once-buzzing economy has been hit hard by the global downturn.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the inaugural run - timed to begin at 9:09 pm local time - Dubai's ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, stepped onto the train as its first passenger, followed by VIPs and officials.\u003cbr/\u003eThe train whizzed through six stations, stopping at each for celebrations, including recitations of poetry.\u003cbr/\u003eSheik Mohammed characterised the project as a vital piece of infrastructure that could revitalise the city. \u003cbr/\u003eAnalyst Hamdi Abdul Rahman agrees.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is definitely a connection between the metro and development (of a city). remaining stations on the 32-mile (52-kilometres) red line are due to open by February.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project, launched 3-and-a-half years ago, has also run about 80 per cent over budget and a second line is expected to enter service in June 2010 - three months behind schedule.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials say the system is one of the world's most advanced.\u003cbr/\u003eDriverless, remote-controlled trains will whisk passengers along an elevated line that snakes over and under numerous bridges crisscrossing the city's main multilane highways before heading underground in the city centre.\u003cbr/\u003eStations are air conditioned, not an insignificant consideration given that temperatures routinely top 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43,3 Celsius) and the summer humidity is oppressive.\u003cbr/\u003eWireless Internet is being promised throughout.\u003cbr/\u003eEach five-car train has a separate compartment reserved for women and children, much like the Arab world's only other metro in Cairo.\u003cbr/\u003eWomen will be able to sit in other cars as well.\u003cbr/\u003eRides start at 1.8 dirhams, or about 50 US cents.\u003cbr/\u003eA gold-class trip on the length of the system costs up to 13 dirhams, or 3.55 US dollars one-way.\u003cbr/\u003eThe system is operated by Serco Group, a British contractor whose businesses include running rail networks and prisons in
