Wide shot of Piergiovanni walking down the school corridor, as a line of students follow him\u003cbr/\u003eHow do you keep the attention of tech-savvy schoolchildren if they are bored in class? \u003cbr/\u003eItaly's teacher of the year, Luca Piergiovanni, turned to podcasting, and he says it works. \u003cbr/\u003eThe beautiful countryside of Lake Como nods to Italy's past - but in a neighbouring district new technology is helping to build the future.\u003cbr/\u003e37-year-old former DJ and middle school teacher, Luca Piergiovanni, has revamped his literature, history and geography curriculum with a new subject-- podcasting. \u003cbr/\u003ePiergiovanni is the first in Italy, and only second in the world, to use podcasting and multimedia production to teach traditional subjects.\u003cbr/\u003eHis first class Web site, www.Chocolat3b.podomatic.com, was launched in 2007 and has won international acclaim. \u003cbr/\u003eIt highlights the student's commentary on poetry, art and pop music as well as interviews with international experts on multimedia. Students anywhere in the world can download their podcasts for free from iTunes.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The educational value of podcasting in schools is huge,\" says Piergiovanni. \"Just think about the fact that students learn how to work in a team, to interact and give each other tasks. Then in order to produce a video or a radio episode they must research,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year his Chocolat3B project was a finalist in the Global Junior Challenge competition in Rome. \u003cbr/\u003eThis international event, held in Italy every two years, awards teachers and students who have innovated youth education through technology. \u003cbr/\u003ePiergiovanni is now extending the experiment to his entire Como School District, involving teachers from elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. Ahead of the new school year, he spent weeks trying to persuade his colleagues to take part in a new project called \"PodClass.\" \u003cbr/\u003eWith the help of multimedia staff at Alessandro Volta High School in Como, Piergiovanni is helping teachers turn regular class projects into multimedia products. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the multimedia centre, students can record their learning experience, put it online, and make their families proud with a click of mouse. Educators enjoy the boost in student's motivation, and exchange podcasts with other colleagues to promote Piergiovanni's idea. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Podclass\" video projects can be found on YouTube, Piergiovanni's Chocolat3B Web site and the Volta High School website.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a very interesting tool, especially because this tool motivates children very much, because they like to show what they do,\" says Monica Della Cristina, a 5th grade teacher at Olgiate Comasco Elementary School. \"By producing podcasts they are able to do that. They can share their work with anyone who is able to see it on the internet.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWith Piergiovanni's help, Della Cristina transformed her English lesson into a video clip. Her students learned the lyrics to Louis Armstrong's \"What a Wonderful World,\" and then recorded themselves in a choir line and watched a multimedia lab technician put it together for them.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough recent cuts in education have forced Piergiovanni, like thousands of Italian teachers, to change schools and accept part-time contracts, he continues to work with his original group of middle-school students. Now in high school, these students meet regularly with Piergiovanni after school to produce new podcasts. Because the school district has no funding for the veteran students, the Chocolat3B team works at the teacher's home.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Everything becomes more enticing, more interesting for us
