Mid of old man leaving hospital \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of people a day are being seen at one of the few specialist eye hospitals in Afghanistan.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow doctors at the Noor Eye Hospital say they''re struggling to keep up with the demand.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Noor Eye Hospital - a rundown facility in the Afghan capital.\u003cbr/\u003eHere, some 400 to 500 patients gather each day hoping to be seen , and possibly to receive treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eEye care in Afghanistan is one of the casualties of 30 years of war. \u003cbr/\u003eRoughly 1.5 (m) million Afghans are visually impaired, according to the Ministry of Public Health, which estimates that three Afghans lose their vision in one eye every hour.\u003cbr/\u003eEye hospitals and clinics exist in only a few major Afghan cities. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country''s lack of roads, mountainous terrain, extreme poverty and three decades of civil unrest are roadblocks to getting care, and giving it. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile health care is improving in the country, 80 percent of Afghanistan''s 28 (m) million people still do not have access to eye care services, the Ministry of Public Health says.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors at the Noor facility are hoping to save the sight of Nasaratullah, a round-faced baby boy from Ghazni province in eastern Afghanistan, who has retinoblastoma, a rare cancerous tumour in his retina.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Najib Osmani says if he had seen Nasaratullah earlier he might have been able to save his eye, which was riddled with cancer after just six months of life.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Unfortunately they refer, they come to us very late. Not in Afghanistan at least but we can refer them to neighbouring countries for better treatment, for radiotherapy, chemotherapy and so on.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAfter removing the baby''s eye, Osmani embedded a white-ish glass ball into the socket, which can later be replaced with an artificial eye. \u003cbr/\u003eOsmani says the infant''s other eye appears healthy now, but there is a 40 percent chance that cancer will develop in it as well.\u003cbr/\u003eSixty percent of all blindness in Afghanistan is blamed on cataracts, which are easily removed in brief operations common in the developed world. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in Afghanistan, only 16,000 cataract surgeries are performed each year, enough to address most of the new cases annually,  but not enough to eliminate a backlog of some 200,000 existing cases of cataracts in all corners of the nation.\u003cbr/\u003eBabi Dukther, a 45-year-old woman from Kabul, is one of the lucky ones. \u003cbr/\u003eOn a hot day in the dusty Afghan capital, she walked barefoot into an operating room to have a cataract removed from her left eye.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mother of seven says her sight has been degenerating for some time.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My eyes have become weaker over five or six months and in the last month, got much worse.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors perform 15 to 20 operations at the hospital each day. With more space, beds and equipment, they could do more, \u003cbr/\u003eDr Yosuf Mahboob says they have far too many patients needing their help.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As I said, we are handling 400 to 500 patients a day OPD (Outpatient Department). We admit about 20-30 daily and we admit according to free beds because we do not have the capacity for more patients and the wards are small.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePatients start lining up outside the hospital at around 7:30 in the morning.\u003cbr/\u003eThere''s plenty of pushing and shoving to get to two tiny registration windows, one for men and the other for women. \u003cbr/\u003ePatients thrust their fists, clutching the entrance fee of 50 Afghanis, or about one US dollar, inside the windows hoping to be the next person allowed inside.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter registering, the patients sit in stifling waiting areas. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong those waiting for treatment there''s a 4-year-old girl with infected eyes ringed in red, men with cataracts shuffling with canes and a woman who suffered a splinter in her eye while chopping wood. \u003cbr/\u003eThose called from the waiting rooms line up for an eye test. \u003cbr/\u003eThe eye chart is painted on a glowing light box that the patients view in a mirror. \u003cbr/\u003eFewer than 30 percent of Afghans are literate, so instead of letters of the alphabet, the chart uses a symbol that resembles an ````E.'''' Patients are asked to say whether the symbol is facing left, right, up or down.\u003cbr/\u003eObserving the test takers was nine-year-old Safauddin, his right eye severely deformed by a type of neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumours to grow in the nervous system. \u003cbr/\u003eHis mother became angry when doctors said the boy could not be treated at the hospital, which has no facilities or expertise to treat Safauddin''s disease.\u003cbr/\u003eNoor Eye Hospital is the last stop in Afghanistan for patients with serious eye conditions and if they can''t be treated
