It raises the entire level of our holdings in all areas, but particularly in American.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFrom rich society matrons immortalised by John Singer Sargeant to workers on the docks in 1870s New York, the additions help complete the history of America on canvas.\u003cbr/\u003eSarah Cash worked at the Corcoran for 16 years, she's now a consulting curator at the National Gallery.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have a slice of American life down at the docks, people of different races, perhaps some recent immigrants who are there working together,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"But it's not just a lunchtime, these men are actually engaged in conversation, there's some storytelling going on in the painting. We can see the man at the bottom centre facing to the right of the painting in the red shirt, gesturing and other men listening to him very attentively. And, it's entirely possible, given the great prominence of the newspaper in the foreground of the painting, which I believe is a New York newspaper, that they're discussing potentially some current issues, possibly even current labour issues because those were very much at the fore during this period.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the first painting by American artist John George Brown to join the National Gallery's collection.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother important work that's made its way into the National Gallery's collection is Frederic Edwin Church's \"Niagara\" from 1857.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's thought to be one of the great painted views of an iconic American landscape.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It also did something that many people thought was impossible, it actually caught the sensation, the feeling of being at Niagara,\" says gallery deputy director and curator, Franklin Kelly.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Many people had tried to paint it, but it didn't quite seem to have the same drama. And Church did a number of things, he took away all foreground, so you're suspended as if you're right there about to fall in the water. And, he shows both the expanse, the great vista looking off into the distance, even to the horizon, where you can see the clouds over the horizon.
