Wide of Tangier     \u003cbr/\u003eThe Moroccan city of Tangier was once a mecca for the international jet set, a watering hole for writers, artists and spies.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the in crowd moved on and now there are no takers for the 12 million Euro mansion once owned by the French design guru Yves Saint Laurent, despite efforts to revive the cultural life of the city.\u003cbr/\u003eWith its bustling mix of old and new, beach and bazaar, the Moroccan city of Tangier has been a magnet for visitors throughout the ages. \u003cbr/\u003eSituated at the point where Africa meets Europe, it was a legendary bolt hole for spies from around the world, mixing with artists, writers and celebrities soaking up the bohemian atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hotel El Minzah was a favourite watering hole for old Hollywood stars like Rex Harrison, Richard Harris and Ryan O' Neal. The Rolling Stones and Aristotle Onassis were Tangier regulars.\u003cbr/\u003eAs resident antique dealer Christopher Gibbs explains, Tangier \"was welcoming to the artistic and the aesthetical.  They felt at home.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHome for French design guru Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berge was the sumptuous Villa Mabrouka, once owned by a Kuwaiti princess.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith its landscaped gardens and clifftop views the villa, nicknamed the House of Luck, has been on the market since Yves Saint Laurent died in 2008.  So far there has been no luck in finding a buyer, perhaps no surprise with a price tag of 12 million Euros (16.35 million USD).\u003cbr/\u003eLocal property agent Quito Fierro explains the unique attractions of the location: \u003cbr/\u003e\"Villa Mabrouka was an impulse buy at the end of the 90s when Yves St. Laurent decided that he wanted a summer house by the sea. So Tangier is the place there the two oceans meet.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAfter Yves Saint Laurent's death his partner Pierre Berge arranged a massive auction of their art and valuables from their various homes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sale in Paris in 2009 was a sensation, raising a record breaking 372 million Euros ($477 million USD).  The proceeds benefit their charitable foundation for research into HIV/AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast to the flamboyance of their other properties Villa Mabrouka is simply decorated and serene.\u003cbr/\u003eAs historian Rachel Muyal explains, artists of all persuasions were drawn to Tangier.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have had not only fashion designers, but also interior decorators and very important people. They came each summer as did lots of writers.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBut now the jet set is a faded memory and the Villa Mabrouka lies empty.\u003cbr/\u003eTangier is a quieter proposition compared to Morocco's livelier attractions like Marrakech, but there are moves to restore the city's cultural life according to Quito Fierro:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that to come to Tangier you really have to love the spirit of the city which tends to be nostalgic about a past era. Tangier always lives on its past and it is being revived through the Librairie des Colonnes.  It's been bought by Pierre Berge and is part of the attempt to bring back a cultural dimension to the city.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe Librairie des Colonnes isn't just a bookstore, it's a cultural institution.  \u003cbr/\u003eOpened in 1949 as an outpost of the French publisher, Editions Gallimard, the shop on Boulevard Pasteur came to be associated with the long list of writers who made the city on the Straits of Gibraltar their home for a few years, or just a few months.  \u003cbr/\u003eWriters like Jean Genet, Paul Bowles, Samuel Beckett, Marguerite Yourcenar, Tennessee Williams and Joe Orton - the list seems endless.\u003cbr/\u003eLong term Tangier resident Christopher Gibbs is thrilled that Pierre Berge has invested in refurbishing the bookshop.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's the daddy of the bookshops. There are two other European bookshops but it's the best.  It's very exciting for us to have its fresh elegance breezing in,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eTangier always had a nucleus of intellectuals and writers and this bookshop where they used to meet.\u003cbr/\u003eBooks may not bring back the glory days but Pierre Berge's is satisfied with a job well done.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am very happy to see a bookshop like the Librairie des Colonnes.
