They ignored that information and failed to implement  the corrective measures. In fact now they are paying the price for their complacency. While the risks of B-S-E in the United States are the lowest that they have ever been, it is not by accident, Mr Chairman, but by a series of well thought out scientifically sound steps.\"   \u003cbr/\u003e8. Wide shot of hearing\u003cbr/\u003eU-S health experts on Wednesday said the risk of travellers to Europe catching mad-cow disease was very low, given the precautions that have been put in place in the U-S, and the relatively few number of illnesses reported overall.\u003cbr/\u003eTestifying before a Senate Science, Transportation and Commerce subcommittee, an advisor to the National Institutes of Health on mad-cow disease said Americans should not be concerned about travelling - or eating meat - in Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eMad-cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (B-S-E) is linked to a human brain-wasting disease that has killed some 80 Europeans since the mid-1990s, mostly in Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eCases have also been reported in France, Portugal, Germany, Spain and Ireland.\u003cbr/\u003eThere has never been a confirmed case of mad-cow disease in the U-S.\u003cbr/\u003eWednesday's panel of experts told lawmakers that the risk of the disease spreading to the U-S was small because of restrictions on livestock and meat imports.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Will Hueston said the U-S has avoided problems by taking many more precautions than most European nations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe disease is believed to be transmitted through eating pieces of the brain or nervous system of an infected animal.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts added that foot-and-mouth disease,
