Wide of a fisherman on Lake Chilwa\u003cbr/\u003eDeclining fish stocks in Malawi's lakes has created a booming fish farming market.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the price for fish continues to rise, locals are finding ways to make this vital source of protein available to the country's poorest people.\u003cbr/\u003eFish hang in the sun at Like Cilwa, one of Malawi's rift valley lakes.\u003cbr/\u003eFish, like these tilapia, have traditionally served as a source of protein for Malawians.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this sight is getting rarer.\u003cbr/\u003eJailos Tsanya has been fishing at Lake Chilwa for 25 years, but he says his job is getting more difficult as fish grow scarcer.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the early years the catches were higher, but as the years have gone by fish stocks are dwindling,\" says Tsanya.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the World Fish Centre catches of tilapia from Malawi's lakes have decreased from 14,000 tons (12,700,590kg) per year in the early 1990s to about 2,000 (1,814,369kg) today.\u003cbr/\u003eWith fewer fish come higher prices, putting this important source of protein out of reach of many poorer people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Fish Centre is an international not-for-profit scientific research organisation that has an office in Zomba, Malawi.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of their projects is aquaculture. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms which include fish and aquatic plants. And in Malawi most of the aquaculture, or exclusively, is the farming of fish,\" says Aquaculture Scientist Dr Daniel Jamu.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Fish Centre helps establish small to medium size fingerling producers.\u003cbr/\u003eFingerlings are the baby fish, which are then sold on to local fish farmers to raise adult fish.\u003cbr/\u003eAgnes Kanyema is one of around 50 fingerling producers around Malawi.\u003cbr/\u003eShe started in 2008, and counts over 30,000 fingerlings as her annual output.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fish with the best chance of producing the largest and healthiest offspring are selected from this pond and taken to a separate pond, explains Kanyema.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When selecting the fish, we look for ones with a big, round belly, so that it can hold many eggs. We avoid the thin fish for breeding,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eApproximately every two months her brooders hatch up to 1,000 eggs each.\u003cbr/\u003eOver 90 percent of the eggs survive.\u003cbr/\u003eOne week after they hatch, the fingerlings are separated from their parents. \u003cbr/\u003eKanyema breeds three species of tilapia, including Lake Malawi's well-known, but increasingly rare, chambo fish.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Here are fingerlings which we sell. We remove them from the pond and sell them for ten Kwacha (US$ 0.07 cents) each.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKanyema also grows soya beans, sunflower seeds and maize to make her own fish feed.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the local farmers who buys fingerlings from Kanyema is Thomas Chikopa.\u003cbr/\u003eHe started fish farming in 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is one of between 6,000 and 10,000 fish farmers in Malawi.\u003cbr/\u003eIt takes Chikopa six months to raise the fingerlings up to a size when they are ready to be harvested and sold.\u003cbr/\u003eWith proper management about 80 percent of the fingerlings survive to adulthood.\u003cbr/\u003eHe sells the grown fish for between three to four times what he paid for the fingerlings.\u003cbr/\u003eGrowing his own crops for fish feed also helps to keep costs down.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The scarcity of fish at the lake had a negative impact on our lives. Malawi in the 1950s it has only really taken off in the last 20 years.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the scarcity of fish in the lakes, market conditions have changed and fish farming is now profitable.\u003cbr/\u003eEven foreigners are starting to invest in fish farming in Malawi.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department here are currently over 4 050 fish farmers who own 9 500 fishponds which produce an estimated 800 tonnes of fish annually. \u003cbr/\u003eThe growing trend will help ease pressure on the wild fish stocks in Malawi's
