But it's not clear...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eFast-food workers and labour organisers protested in cities across the United States on Thursday amid a push for higher wages.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers say walkouts are planned in 100 cities, with rallies set for another 100 cities. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it's not clear what the actual turnout will be, how many of the participants are workers and what impact they'll have on restaurant operations. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Atlanta, protesters gathered before dawn and continued demonstrating throughout the day.\u003cbr/\u003eOne worker, Antwon Brown, said after years of working he'd only been given a 25 cent raise above the minimum wage.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile sympathetic to the plight of workers, customer Jeff Stillinger, did not think protests and walk outs were the way to improve conditions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe nation-wide actions would mark the largest showing yet in a push that began a year ago. \u003cbr/\u003eIn New York City, about 100 protesters gathered in front of several fast food venues.\u003cbr/\u003eNineteen-year-old Jenny Paris works at Popeyes restaurant saving for college, while helping support her family.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It has become really difficult, I have had to get a second job to make my ends meet, and still, no ends are still meeting,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eEduardo Shore has to work 75 hours a week to support his family.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Fifteen dollars will give me a better style of living, I'll be living in a better environment,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe big question for restaurant workers and owners alike, is will customers be willing to pay more to improve working conditions?\u003cbr/\u003eOne customer, Channon Wetstone, said she would pay a little more to improve the \"slave labour\" conditions many people work under.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a time when there's growing national and international attention on economic disparities, labour unions, worker advocacy groups and Democrats are hoping to build public support to raise the federal minimum wage of 7.25 US dollars per hour, or about 15-thousand US dollars a year for full-time work.\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters are calling for pay of 15 US dollars an hour, but the figure is seen more as a rallying point than a near-term possibility.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the nation's capital city, Washington, DC, activists made their point at the Smithsonian's Air and Space museum by confronting tourists at the McDonald's restaurant.\u003cbr/\u003eThe push for higher pay in the fast-food industry faces an uphill battle. \u003cbr/\u003eThe industry competes aggressively on value offerings and companies have warned that they would need to raise prices if wages were hiked. \u003cbr/\u003eMost fast-food locations are also owned and operated by franchisees, which lets companies such as McDonald's Corp., Burger King Worldwide Inc. and Yum Brands Inc. say that they don't control worker pay. \u003cbr/\u003eThe National Restaurant Association, an industry lobbying group, is pushing back against the protests saying they threatens jobs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A 15 dollar an hour minimum wage, as a starting wage in the restaurant industry is just really not realistic in today's economy,\" said Scott DeFife, from the National Restaurant Association.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Detroit, about 50 demonstrators turned out for a rally in front of a McDonald's. \u003cbr/\u003eA handful of employees walked off the job, but the restaurant stayed open as a manager and other employees worked the front counter and drive-thru window.\u003cbr/\u003eMcDonald's said in a statement that it's \"committed to providing our employees with opportunities to succeed.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe company, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, said it offers employees advancement opportunities, competitive pay and benefits. \u003cbr/\u003eSupporters of wage hikes have been more successful at the state and local level. \u003cbr/\u003eCalifornia, Connecticut and Rhode Island raised their minimum wages this year and last month, voters in New Jersey approved an increase in the minimum to 8.25 US dollars an hour, up from 7.25 dollars an hour.\u003cbr/\u003eAtlanta, Georgia - 5 December 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
