There is no vaccine for Dengue.
Dengue fever is a viral disease that inflicts severe flu-like symptoms _ the joint pain is so severe its nickname is "breakbone fever."
It isn't fatal but victims are then susceptible to subsequent exposures to Dengue hemorrhagic fever.
Joel Biddle is a Key West resident whose Dengue fever symptoms lasted more than a week.
However despite his experience he and other Key West residents and environmental groups think the genetically modified mosquitoes pose a bigger threat than regular dengue or even dengue hemorrhagic fever.
Biddle worries the modified genetic material will somehow be passed to humans and the Keys ecosystem and he wants more research into the potential risks.
"Oxitec has billions and billions of dollars, you know, in this, because they will become the genetically-modified champions of the world and will be making trillions and trillions of dollars, more than we can think of." he says.
The Aedes aegypti isn't the only mosquito species in the Keys, but it's the most difficult to manage.
Common in the Southeast and the Caribbean, it lurks in standing water around homes and businesses and can breed in containers as small as bottle caps.
It also has shown resistance to the pesticides the agency uses to control other mosquito species.
Coleen Fitzsimmons, a biologist at the Florida Keys Mosquito Control says "It's not a mosquito that's out in the swamps, that we can just go out and treat a swamp. It's the kind of mosquito that lays its eggs in cryptic breeding places around people's homes."
The district spends roughly $1 million a year to suppress the Aedes aegypti population, 10 to 15 percent of the Mosquito Control agency's budget.
In the trial, thousands of male mosquitoes bred by Oxitec would be released in a handful of Key West blocks where the Aedes aegypti is known to breed; the number of mosquitoes in those neighbourhoods would be measured against the numbers from similar blocks where no modified mosquitoes were released.
Only female mosquitoes bite, so the modified genetic material wouldn't be passed on to humans, officials say.
Haydn Parry, CEO Oxitec says "This is birth control for insects. We will release males, because males do not bite or spread disease. They will mate with females, and those offspring will not survive. The more males you release that are sterile, in effect, the less offspring you have. But there's an awful lot of secrecy going on."
Real estate agent Mila de Mier has collected nearly 117,000 signatures on a petition she posted on Change.org against the trial. Most come from outside the Keys, which de Mier says shows that tourists don't support the mosquito control district.
"Let's talk about business: What is going to be the real price tag? Would you travel to place where they experiment with genetically modified mosquitoes? Because I won't," de Mier says.
Biddle, who had Dengue in 2009, wants Oxitec to continue testing the modified mosquitoes outside the U.S. The company has trials in the Cayman Islands, Brazil and Malaysia.
Mosquito control and Oxitec officials say they're being transparent about their data and the trial, though they acknowledge that the buzzwords "genetically modified" can make people think about "Jurassic Park," the novel and a movie series about an island's failure to contain mistakes made by scientists manipulating the genetic code of cloned dinosaurs.
Coleen Fitzsimmons says "I know the words 'genetically modified' scare people. The FDA says no genetically modified species can be released without approval.
The state's agriculture department oversees the mosquito control district, but the agency does not expect any challenge from the state if the FDA signed off on the trial.
The mosquito control district wouldn't need any local permit to move ahead with the trial, either, but to address residents' questions, officials held a public meeting earlier this year and have posted information about the trial on the agency's website.
The Monroe County Health Department also has a campaign encouraging residents to protect public health by draining standing water where mosquitoes can breed and reducing their exposure to mosquitoes by wearing repellent, and fixing torn window screens.
There hasn't been a case of Dengue in Key West since November 2010, but two other South Florida counties reported two isolated cases this
