Zoom out to wide of artist spray painting on wall\u003cbr/\u003eAt first it was seen as vandalism, now graffiti art is moving off the street and into the gallery.\u003cbr/\u003eStreet art has become big business in Los Angeles with dedicated galleries, paint suppliers and walls blazing full of colour. \u003cbr/\u003eFor some people this is an eyesore, for others, a masterpiece.\u003cbr/\u003eStreet art has come a long way from the gang culture tagging of New York subway trains in the 1970s and 80s.\u003cbr/\u003eVast tracts of walls in downtown Los Angeles are the canvasses for all sorts of styles, from science fiction to psychedelic.\u003cbr/\u003eSubjects can range from politics to popular culture.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of it is influenced by comic book illustration, with heightened colour and exaggerated drawing.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, with some notable exceptions, the art world has been notoriously sniffy about street art.\u003cbr/\u003eAustralian Anthony Lister, has made a career out of his painting. He lives in New York but travels and exhibits extensively.  For Lister, street art is democratic, a place where everyone can engage:\u003cbr/\u003e\"This whole street thing is almost like when photography went digital. Everything is just done with aerosol spray paint you know, graffiti art.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePaint store owner Matthew Stibbe is one of those whose business profits from the boom in spray painting and graffiti. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Montana urban art store is one of the biggest in the USA and the first art supply store geared toward graffiti and street art.\u003cbr/\u003eStibbe is convinced that street art has evolved beyond its roots in signature tagging:\u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of times it has to do with letters, characters, using spray paint. But it has also evolved over time. So, from the days it was in New York on the trains out here to LA on the walls. It's gone through this evolution.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOne Los Angeles gallery is dedicated to bringing street art in from the cold. LAB ART's owners commission artists to reproduce their street images on to canvas. That way the work can be preserved - and sold - just like any other form of art, says LAB ART's Iskander Lemseffer:\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we want to do is, we want to give street art the place it deserves in art history. In the streets it's constantly cleaned, constantly painted over. What we want to do is we want to immortalise it. So, whatever is in the streets we try to get it on canvas or on wood panel or as an installation. People can buy the pieces, take them home and they could live forever.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLAB ART is committed to the cause of street art. Spanning 6,500 square feet of space, the gallery features over 300 works of art and installations from 50 artists.  Pop culture is a big topic, with famous faces like musicians Kanye West and Jay-Z, or Paris Hilton and Andy Warhol. \u003cbr/\u003eLemseffer's partner at LAB ART, Rachel Joltson, is conscious of the contradictions and tensions between the art of the street and the world of contemporary art:\u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of them are poking at contemporary art or even just life in general and what's going on in society. A lot of it is just society critique done in a poking fun way. There's different aspects to street art. Some are very serious, some are playful, some cross both lines. You never really know.
