was due to start sending signals back to NASA on Friday afternoon, shortly after settling on the Martian surface.\u003cbr/\u003eBut so far there's been nothing from the spacecraft or the two smaller micro-probes it deployed as it descended.    \u003cbr/\u003eWith the minutes and then hours ticking by, NASA scientists nervously waited for word from the Mars Polar Lander after it failed to radio home on Friday to confirm whether it had safely landed on the Red Planet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe problem with the 165 (m) million U-S dollar spacecraft could be as simple as a mispointed antenna, or as serious as a crash landing or a catastrophic failure during the descent through the Martian atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eThe silence lasted into Friday night, with no signal from the Polar Lander.\u003cbr/\u003eLosing the spacecraft would be devastating for NASA. \u003cbr/\u003eJust 10 weeks ago, the Polar Lander's sibling spacecraft, the 125 (m) million U-S dollar Mars Climate Orbiter, burned up in the planet's atmosphere because of engineers' embarrassing failure to convert navigation data into metric units.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Polar Lander is at the end of an 11-month journey to Mars. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was designed to cut through Mars' atmosphere at precisely the right angle, separate from its heat shield, deploy a parachute and fire a dozen thrusters before setting down.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spacecraft was programmed to slow from 15-thousand-400 miles-per-hour (26,600 kilometres per hour) to five miles-per-hour (8 kilometres per hour) just before touchdown, which was to have been at 12-01 P-S-T. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was to capture the sounds of Mars, analyze the atmosphere and gather samples of the frosty soil, searching for signs of water and other conditions necessary for life.\u003cbr/\u003eOne possible explanation for the delay is that the Polar Lander's computer slipped into a protective safe mode immediately after landing, in which case it would postpone its first signal to Earth, 157 (m) million miles away.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother scenario is that the probe lost its bearings on the way down and could not correctly point its antenna.\u003cbr/\u003eIf everything had worked perfectly, the signal confirming touchdown would have arrived back to Earth at 12-39 Pacific Standard Time (P-S-T) on Friday. \u003cbr/\u003eBut
