Various whale swimming in sea\u003cbr/\u003eBiodiversity is the key element to the uniqueness of Addo Elephant National Park.\u003cbr/\u003eOriginally primarily for the conservation of wild Elephants, the park is now a major tourism destination where visitors can see a wide variety of wildlife from small beetles to large carnivores, in a sustainable environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe park's most recent expansion has included the Woody Cape Nature Reserve on the Eastern Cape coastline.\u003cbr/\u003eElephants are the star attraction at the Addo National Park.\u003cbr/\u003eFounded in 1935 as a 2000 hectare reserve with 11 elephants in 1935, the park now boasts 170,000 hectares and over 500 elephants and a wealth of biodiversity. \u003cbr/\u003eMegan Taplin is the Regional Communications Manager for Addo Elephant Park, and has lived in the park herself for the last seven years.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says that visitors can engage more with animals when they see them in their natural habitat.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of people get the wrong impression if they visit a private game reserve, or a zoo or a park, that that's how they should see animals, and here you really get to experience what their natural behaviour is in a natural system. And making sure you can educate your tourists around the greater elements of biodiversity conservation.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe term 'Big 5' began as a marketing tool for hunters who could come to Africa for their trophy of Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Buffalo or Leopard. \u003cbr/\u003eNewly acquired lands undergo a lengthy rehabilitation process, making them suitable habitat for wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003eLarger areas of vegetation can mean greater variety of nutrients as well as more food accessible during rougher times, like the current two-year drought period.\u003cbr/\u003eKnight says Addo has evolved from a species focused park to one focused on Biodiversity elements.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When you talk from a biodiversity perspective, Addo is probably the most diverse park in Africa. elephant population.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Alexandria Dunes in the Woody Cape in Eastern Cape Province are the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, measuring in at 65 kilometres long, and as wide as 5 kilometres in some areas. \u003cbr/\u003eA living dune, the sands move up to 5 kilometres west over a year by high winds. \u003cbr/\u003eThe park now also includes this region and the corresponding coastline.\u003cbr/\u003eThis marine area, which is the meeting place of the park's terrestrial and marine sections, is called the Algoa Bay, and it is teeming with marine life. \u003cbr/\u003eGreat white sharks are drawn to the area by the large colony of seals on nearby Seal Island. \u003cbr/\u003eFive species of whale also migrate through Algoa Bay throughout the winter, including the Southern Right whale and the killer whale. \u003cbr/\u003eOther marine life includes dolphins and numerous sea birds, including the African Penguins and the largest sea gannet population in the world with more
