Various, women protesting in favour of the Islamic headscarves\u003cbr/\u003eFrench legislators are preparing to vote on Tuesday on a controversial law prohibiting religious apparel in public schools. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bill, containing three articles, would ban conspicuous religious symbols from public schools, namely Islamic head scarves, Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses.\u003cbr/\u003eIf passed it is likely to be implemented in time for the start of the new school year in September.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the debate has focused on Muslim head scarves, with France's Muslim population standing at around 5 (m) million, the largest in Western Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eFrench sociologist, Farhad Khosrokhavar told APTN that the legislation will have the greatest effect on the Muslim community. \u003cbr/\u003eKhosrokhavar said he fears that France's large Islamic community will feel that the law  is deliberately targeting them. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said even those who choose not to wear the headscarf or 'hijab' could feel that the legislation is a denial of their personal rights.\u003cbr/\u003eKhosrokhavar said the legislation could increase feelings of alienation within the Muslim community at a time when France is trying to reduce radicalism.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe planned law has drawn criticism from some Muslims in France and in other countries. \u003cbr/\u003eIt would not apply to students in private schools or to French schools in other countries.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the legislation, sanctions for refusing to remove conspicuous religious
