I've been really honored by how honest and open a lot of people have been about that and the emotion that they've shared. It's an interesting moment when real life and entertainment sort of collide." Callies says.
"I think it's part of why entertainment can be useful in that it can be a way of looking at things that are painful and scary with the distance of knowing it's just TV. But it seems to me that this has been, from the conversations I've been having with people, it seems like this has been a year where a lot of people here have learned a lot about themselves and about their loved ones, because I think there are things you learn. You learn a lot about who you really are in moments where you can't be polite or controlled. You're just in the middle of a crisis and that kind of information can be really powerful. It can be really devastating too and it seems to me like people are processing quite a lot of that right now."
In "The Walking Dead", Callies plays a mother who - as she describes - ferociously protects her son.
Being a mother in real-life, she says, has helped in playing the part.
"It's the first time I'm playing a mother and my daughter's only four so I haven't been a mom that long I guess. It simplifies things a lot, I think, from my perspective as an actor because as an actor you're always trying to figure out what your character wants and nothing in the world matters to Lori except keeping her son safe and so there's a really elegant clarity to the part because of her motherhood and because of the danger that her son is in. At the same time the central question that's being asked in season 2, especially the first half of it is, is this a world for children? And I think Lori finds herself asking some very dark questions about whether or not children have a place in this world and I think that's a question that a lot of people ask themselves when they're contemplating being parents. The world is increasingly a very dark place or it's always been a dark place and it's not getting any better. And when we contemplate bringing children into that world, you sort of think having children is a pretty optimistic act and do I really believe that the world is going to be a place in 50 or 60 years when anyone I love has any business being alive. That's a pretty profound question."
However morbid a world festered with zombies might be, Sarah Wayne Callies is everything but.
Her first television appearances began with two short-lived series, CBS'S "Queens Supreme" and WB's "Tarzan." She also appeared as guest roles in "House M.D.", "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Numb3rs".
Prior to "The Walking Dead", she appeared regularly in the FOX series Prison Break from 2005 to 2009 as Dr. Sarah Tancredi. The series received the People's Choice Award for Favorite New Television Drama in 2006 and was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Dramatic Television Series the same year.
Last fall, Callies co-produced and starred in the CBC pilot "Tangled" and plays a former spy trying to balance civilian life with her past.
As for her foray into feature film, Callies recently wrapped production on "Foreverland", which she stars opposite Juliette Lewis and Thomas Dekker. She also stars opposite Milla Jovovich in "Faces in the Crowd", about a woman with face-blindness trying to stop a serial killer.
As for what could be next for the fledgling actress, Callies hints she could be playing a bigger role behind the camera than in front.
"I sold my first screenplay a year ago. I've really loved the process of writing and developing. I like being involved in creating storytelling before the actors come in, because the actors, we're the last people to join a project. They do all this developing and right before they're ready to shoot they throw the actors in. I like getting involved in storytelling at a more ground floor level and I like the flexibility that writing gives me to be anywhere in the world, spend more time with my family. I like having the creative control while I'm writing a script, it's only mine, nobody's come in and cut it up yet and messed it up. But I don't know, this is a business that sometimes just turns to actors and says you're done and when that happens I hope I can leave with as much dignity and grace as I can muster. I hope I can take what I've learned and go teach acting and drama somewhere at a university but I don't know where I'm going to end up. I just know that I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world to have had the adventures that I've had so far, so I'm just in it for as long as I'm allowed to be here."
Asked if any writing is in the works now, Callies said she's "not talking about it," but dropped a hint - a feature film screenplay.
All Customers
This message is for ALL Associated Press (AP) customers to inform you of the upcoming changes to our service and how they will affect your organization.
The timeline
AP will be rolling out High Definition (HD) in phases, beginning with Entertainment from 11 November 2011, followed by Sports News Television (SNTV) in January 2012.
