He  couldn't feed himself, he couldn't walk, he had no coordination, his short term memory  went, couldn't write and he actually was only in bed the last few days of his life. Then when he went to the general hospital it was diagnosed that it  was a progressive, degenerative, neurotic disease but they didn't have a name for it. We  now know the reasons why, that's because Stephen's age was confusing people.
