which has nearly 60 billion (b) US dollars in debt, has asked creditors if it can postpone its payments until at least May 2010.  \u003cbr/\u003eDubai is famed for its sprawling man-made islands, indoor ski slopes and the world's tallest tower, but it has been hit hard by the global credit crunch and recession.   \u003cbr/\u003eProperty prices in Dubai have slumped by around 50 percent within the last year. \u003cbr/\u003eLayoffs, prompted in part by project cancellations and delays, have forced many expatriates out of the city.\u003cbr/\u003eEconomic analyst Kamel Wazne, from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, said the city-state's debt problems were not unusual.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said Dubai was doing what other countries have done, \"running a deficit during a difficult time.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTo meet its obligations, Dubai launched a 20 (b) billion US dollar bond programme at the start of the year, initially raising 10 (b) billion US dollars through a bond sale to the United Arab Emirates' central bank which is based in Abu Dhabi. \u003cbr/\u003eDubai is one of seven self-governing emirates or states that make up the United Arab Emirates, and the oil-rich emirate of Abu Dhabi is home to the UAE's federal government.\u003cbr/\u003eWazne said Dubai was doing the right thing by financing its debt through selling bonds, but warned that this could put a \"burden\" on Dubai's government if it accelerates its debt. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said the government also needed to stimulate economic growth, \"create trust in its banking system\" and \"reduce unemployment.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"This will alleviate some of the pressure on the real estate sectors, and some of the ramification of the financial crisis,\" he said, and would probably mean Dubai could meet its short term debt obligations. \u003cbr/\u003eDubai World was one of the key forces behind the growth of the city-state, which has had to rely on trade, finance and tourism to compensate for its lack of oil wealth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conglomerate, whose businesses range from hauling cargo off ships to building islands and running US luxury hotels, announced last month that it had cut its work force by 15 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eWorld stock markets fell sharply on Thursday as investors fretted over Dubai World's debt problems and the continued fall in the US dollar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe news about Dubai World has stoked fears of a potential default and contagion around the global financial system, particularly in emerging
