projects impact on them and their surroundings.\u003cbr/\u003eSince waters began rising in the 660-kilometre-long (410-mile-long) reservoir when the sluice gates were closed in 2003, villagers tell of warped foundations and fissures snaking along the earth. \u003cbr/\u003ePollution in the once fast-running river is building in the turbid reservoir. \u003cbr/\u003eLandslides, common in the rainy region, are occurring more frequently.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US$22 billion dam, the world's biggest hydroelectric project, was supposed to end flooding along the Yangtze and provide a clean energy alternative to coal. \u003cbr/\u003eApproved in 1992 and due to be completed in 2009, it will generate 84.7 billion kilowatts of electricity each year, nearly enough to light up the counties of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.\u003cbr/\u003eYet along the way more than 1.4 million people had to be relocated. \u003cbr/\u003eExperts have warned that the waters in the enormous reservoir,  about five times the size of Washington D.C., are undermining hillsides and putting pressure on the rock bed, creating the potential for earthquake-like tremors.\u003cbr/\u003eMei Changxin lives in Meiping village in Hubei province. \u003cbr/\u003eHuge cracks have appeared in the side of his house, and he fears it may collapse.  \u003cbr/\u003eLandslides, which are normally common in the rainy region, are occurring more frequently. \u003cbr/\u003eAlmost half of the people in Mei's village have left. \u003cbr/\u003eCriticism over the Three Gorges dam has mounted in recent weeks along with the problems and a landslide in the region killed at least 34 earlier this month.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever local officials remain optimistic. \u003cbr/\u003eSun Zhiyu, Director of the Three Gorges Project's Environmental Protection Bureau says the environmental situation is better than expected. \u003cbr/\u003eBut some environmentalists disagree. \u003cbr/\u003eDai Qing is a vocal critic of the project, whose writings are mostly banned in China. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that such a huge reservoir of water is certain to cause problems. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese sturgeon, which is native to the Yangtze river, is often called a living fossil. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now the creature which has existed for more than 1.4 hundred million years is endangered. \u003cbr/\u003eLiu Denghong, Director of Scientific Research Center, Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute is a sturgeon expert. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the Three Gorges Dam blocks the route of Chinese sturgeons swimming upto stream to spawn. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he says that in order to protect the species from extinction they breed the fish artificially and release the young fry (fish) into another part of the river each year. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers with China's Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute released some 60,000 Chinese sturgeon fries into the Yangtze river on April 22, 2007. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are concerns that the released fry may not survive due to pollution in the river. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever Zhang Zhikui, the Deputy Director of Chongqing Environmental Protection Bureau says he is confident in the water quality of the reservoir, saying the efforts taken to improve it have been effective.\u003cbr/\u003eWaste water treatment plants are set up in some 17 counties in the Three Gorges reservoir in order to reduce the pollution to the water in the reservoir, Zhang told reporters recently. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever waste water from factories can be seen being discharged into the river without being treated in several locations along the river. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's estimated that around one hundred million residents living in the Three Gorges area relies on the reservoir as their main water sources.\u003cbr/\u003eDai Qing questions what will happen if that water becomes polluted. \u003cbr/\u003eSome environmentalists and even few officials are predicting a looming catastrophe if these issues go unchecked.\u003cbr/\u003eBeijing says it will shore up the area's environment with new measures to control pollution, close industrial and mining enterprises and monitor geological hazards. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, local governments are relocating the tens of thousands of people living in dangerous areas.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
