Wide of gallery\u003cbr/\u003eA new exhibit opening at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, brings together 17 late religious portraits that Rembrandt painted in the later years of his life.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one of his final portraits, the aging master portrayed himself as Saint Paul, a man selected by God for no apparent reason to become a Christian and an evangelist.\u003cbr/\u003eSome scholars believe the painter found himself in a similar situation, asking God, why for no apparent reason, he was selected to paint the powerful, timeless images that we know today.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition presents dynamic portrayals of Christ and the Virgin, and of the Apostles who devoted their lives to spreading the Gospel. \u003cbr/\u003eArthur Wheelock, the curator of Northern European paintings at the National Gallery of Art, assembled the portraits in an effort to get answers as to why Rembrandt chose the subject matter.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said that the men and women in the powerful images peer out of the dark recesses of dimly lit interiors, burdened by the weight of their spiritual and emotional concerns.\u003cbr/\u003eSome portraits, such as the image of the Apostle Bartholomew, seem contemporary by the standards of today.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers are grounded in the world they portray of 2000 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Sorrowful Virgin\" may be the last portrait Rembrandt did of his female companion\u003cbr/\u003eFor more than 80 years scholars have debated whether many of these religious portraits formed part of a series.\u003cbr/\u003eThroughout the 17 paintings there are stylistic similarities, but also intriguing differences in the way he applied paint and modelled his forms in creating these imposing images.\u003cbr/\u003eLikewise, Rembrandt portrays the saints, not as heroic, powerful, religious people, but as men and women who have been humbled by their religious experience.\u003cbr/\u003eThe
