Reverse shot of lab specialist conducting test via an automatic machine \u003cbr/\u003eIran is enjoying a boom in blood donations according to the country's Blood Transfusion Organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eIt claims giving blood has never been easier.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the hub of Iran's blood transfusion service.\u003cbr/\u003eBloods and platelets are checked stored and packed ready for redistribution.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's become a sophisticated and highly mechanised affair.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Blood Transfusion Organisation (BTO), Iran has one of the highest in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eIt says twenty five out of every one thousand people now give blood.\u003cbr/\u003eIt claims more blood is donated here than in anywhere else in the Middle East region and it's among top five in Asia.    \u003cbr/\u003eEstablished in 1974, Iran's Blood Transfusion Organisation has a wide network of donation and distribution centres.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has become second nature to give blood and donors can be seen queueing in centres early in the mornings before work.\u003cbr/\u003eStrict procedures are in place to guarantee the safety of blood and the good health of donors. \u003cbr/\u003eBefore giving blood the volunteers see a doctor who decides whether they're fit enough.\u003cbr/\u003eAli Heydari is a regular here.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"I come here two or three times a year for blood donation and I think it is a kind of Zakat (religious tax) for my health. I come here as an act of gratitude for my health and also to help my fellow countrymen.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMost volunteers come for blood donation in Iran with humanitarian and religious motives.   \u003cbr/\u003eVolunteers must weigh more than 50 kilograms (7.8 stones) and be aged between 17 and 60 years old.\u003cbr/\u003eFour is the maximum number of donations that can be given in one year.\u003cbr/\u003eEbadollah Saelkmoqaddam of the Tehran Province Blood Transfusion Department says his department clocks up an average 1200 donation each day.\u003cbr/\u003eThe given number fluctuates and on religious holidays the number hits record highs of around 2000 donations each day.\u003cbr/\u003eThe current Iranian record holder is a 75 year old who's made 189 donations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe central laboratory tests the bloods for type and potential diseases and each centre is responsible for guaranteeing the safety of its blood products. \u003cbr/\u003eTehran's central blood distribution centre supplies 150 hospitals around the clock. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Mozhghan Naseralipour heads the centre. He says: \"Usually, we receive some 7000 blood bag requests from 150 hospitals and in fact, we distribute these blood products among the hospitals.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIt's easy to understand why.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the demand is for accident victims. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Transfusion Service say more accidents result in deaths in Iran than many other parts of the world, especially on the roads.\u003cbr/\u003eEach year there are twenty thousand traffic accidents leading to 200,000 injuries.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Hassan Abolghasemi is the Director General of Iran's Blood Transfusion and Distribution Organisation. \u003cbr/\u003eHis department runs the country's most advanced education programme in the field of haematology.\u003cbr/\u003eAbolghasemi argues Iran has become one of the most developed countries in the field of blood donation and research\u003cbr/\u003eHe's keen to emphasise that Iran's blood transfusion and distribution service is among the safest and its programmes to tackle HIV has been supported by World Health Organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eHe believes the expansion of methadone clinics across the country has contributed a drop in the number of HIV patient.     \u003cbr/\u003eAbolghasemi says: \"Per capita HIV infection, hepatitis types B and C in Iran are quite different from that of the developing countries.
